Ah, Jerry, I think that rig just might be considered a little "over kill" for a 14' Jon boat. I would even think that he would need some out-riggers to support that monster hanging over the side.:hysterical::yes:

I'd call this a work of art!
However, Art did not make this roller. My friend Richard (candyman) made this one.

Some guys get crazy with the design of their prop sticks, I recommend you keep it simple!
Your in 14' jon boat, so lots of things are going to change your angle and depth of your prop stick and how the line comes out of the water.
So, you need to be able to adjust your prop stick quickly and smoothly for these changes.
What type of line are you running? Snood or reg?
That really matters when selecting the design of your prop stick.
I have been using mine for years, with different types and sizes of boats. It is very simple and works great. I never had one break, get tangled, ect....
I use a scotty pole holder and use 1" pvc, filled with foam, I don't have any pics but maybe I can get one for you.
The pole holder allows quick changes to depth and location of the prop stick against the water level and line postition.
I use 1" since I do not run a snood line, if you do it will need to be bigger in size to prevent the snoods from wrapping around it.
I have to base's for the pole holder, one is for when I have someone with me dipping, and the other is further back for when I'm driving and dipping.
I can also take it off and store in one of my compartments and it is out of site and not in the way. And I have an extra pole holder for fishing!

Running a reg line, not snoods... I too want to keep it simple. As you, I want to make it asjustable for running it myself or with the kids... And your right, need to be able to compensate for line tightness, tide, wind etc...
Would love to see a pic of yours if you can.... I'm headed out back now to try to envision how I'm going to do this, I'm not much of a designer/engeineer..... or fabricator for that matter....
Thanks !

Not sure if you can see it, but on the pole holder I drilled a hole and inserted a bolt with a wing nut, I can quickly loosen that wing nut and rotate the prop stick forward or back for changes on the line. You can also use the pole holders grooves to lock it in at different angles.

In the second pic you can see both of the pole holder bases I have mounted. The one behind the seat is for when someone is dipping in the front, the one further back is for when I'm by myself driving and dipping.
You can see behind the seat that there is about a foot or so of extra pipe, I can extend it out or bring it in depending on my dipper. Some guys dip between the boat and the line, and others dip from the outside in. With this I can change it to whatever works for my current dipper...

Weber,
THANKS!!! I have two of those holders my dad gave me and I never mounted!!! I have a very similar boat, but no decking, so I'm mounting mine right to the gunwale!!! I'm pumped, a very basic and easy set-up and it will work perfect! Hopefully have it done this week (quite busy with a newborn and 5 other kids).
THANKS EVERYONE !!!!!!!

Going Saturday, but on my neighbors boat or my 18' pontoon that is rigged and ready to go.
I my take the "Bow Movement" on Sunday for it's shakedown trip. Due to circumstances, the old girl hasn't seen the water in a while, been using the pontoon mostly. But this year, the BM will be seeing a lot more action, as she is used to...........
How about you? Where will you be? I'm probably hitting the South.......

I just got back from Lowes, 1" it is... I'm sure that refers to the inside diameter... The elbows and cap are 1 1/4"....

1" it is - thanks.
That's a Scotty "Baitcaster/Spinning Rod Holder" right?
Any opinion on which base is strongest? Deckmount or flush?
This sure looks easier than my first (I just got a different boat, so have to dedo it), which I made for a 12' aluminum rowboat. This one certainly aces the 'flexible' category.

Yes its 1", its tight in the holder you have to actually pull the holder a little to get it in there.
Make sure you use the thicker pvc for strength, sch40 or bigger.

Yeah, its the scotty holder, not sure which is stronger. I would use what ever fits your boat the best.

Sorry. I may be jumping in a little late. I made a similar design as Weber's for my 14' Starcraft jon boat. It was clamped to my gunnel. I made mine with the rod holder angled. I also made my prop stick adjustable, so that I could raise and lower it and move it away from the boat. It was made with 1 1/4" and 1" PVC.
http://tomytek.com/prop/action.jpg
I tied a rope to the back of it to brace it from the pull of my trotline. If I didn't, the pull from my trotline would probably rip off my prop stick.
http://tomytek.com/prop/rope.jpg
I later upgraded to a 16.5' Starcraft and modified my prop stick. I used the same roller part, but change the the mount to a cradle. This allows me to move my prop stick anywhere on my boat.

http://tomytek.com/crabbing/theresone.jpg
Now I have a 218DLV Carolina Skiff and modified my prop stick to fit. I had to make a new cradle and lower the roller part. The square part of my prop stick is to prevent guests from accidentally knocking off the line while dipping.

More good ideas Tomytek - I particularly like the extra piece to stop the line from being lost. I've done that more than once when I got under the line with the net and lifted the line right off the propstick ;-(
Does your roller actually roll? I did a pvc over pvc roller like that on my last one and it never actually spun. Seems there was so little friction on the roller from the line, and probably some dirt in between the pvc, that it never moved.
Thanks,
Mike

The roller part does not roll. I believe that it was a 2" piece of PVC. The idea is to have a pipe big enough, so that your snood does not wrap around the PVC. It would probably work better if the entire section was 2" PVC. My line actually started getting caught in the corner from wear and tear, so I cut it off and added a rubber flap. It works much better now.

Tomytek,
GREAT info, and thanks for sharing !
Just got done mounting my Scotty rod holders, have a few extra holes in the gunwale LOL:eek:
The PVC I bought is too small, I must have a different model holders than Weber... So back to Lowes tomorrow for 1 1/2", I tried a piece my neighbor had and it fit snug.......
Almost done, and pics to come.
THANKS EVERYONE for all your help !!!!!!!

I keep mine simple and cheap. I run my line from an elevated seat on the front of my boat and run the line with a trolling motor. I have my hook about half way down my boat. I also have a 14'. I only use my gas motor to run out to my area and back and to go from the end of my line back to the beginning. It's made from 3/4" PVC, but you could beef it up and make it from 1". I have a couple on the boat at all time and have 1 that I can attach to the back if I just want to use my gas motor. It cost about $2.00 and takes about 10 minutes to make19394 on a bad day.

Thanks to Weber & Tomytek for the various propstick ideas. I took what you had and replaced with two curved pieces I had laying around - it works really well because the line stays in the curved section, so it doesn't get jammed against a joint and I'm hoping this will create less wear. I took Tomytek's idea for the far end which will stop me from losing the line if I lift the line too high with the net.
Filled most of it with foam and capped the outside end. Capped the inside end too, then realized it wouldn't fit into the rod holder that way, so I cut the cap off and put an inch of epoxy to seal it. It floats well.
It worked very well, and I didn't need any sort of tensioner to stop it from sliding right out of the holder - friction seems to have taken care of keeping it in place.
Very adjustable as advertised - up/down, in/out.
Thanks for the ideas!
