After a long morning of changing the steering cable on the boat. Got to CC around 11/12, somewhere around there. Got the boat started and idled out under the bridge, got past the no wake zone. Put the hammer down, and nothing but booging down. Disengaged the transmission and RPM's came right up. Put it back in gear and throtled up, Nothing. Just boggs down.
Shut the engine off, took the cowling off, took a look around, couldnt find anything. So then went to try and start again. Now just clicking noise. I'm assuming my starter is gone. I jumped the solinoid and the bendix came up, but nothing.
So my real problem lies within the bogging down of the engine.
I'm guessing blocked fuel line, clogged filter, or bad gas. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.
Thank god for sea tow. I guess it payed for itself already this year, LOL...

The bogging down same thing happened to me 2 years ago it wound up being the gasket to my carburetor was ate up from ethenol so i replaced it and she worked like a champ and for as the starter it wouldn't come all the way up to actually turnn anything I got home and put some fluid film on it and she fired right up. But then again my motor is a 1983 mercury blackmax. I can't seem to kill it and that's a good thing.:clapping2:

Grady-
Mine is a 95 Blackmax (135), so i'm probably looking at the same deal. Just wouldn't work right under load.

mine did the same thing when the carb gasket was bad it was letting too much air in and when i would get on it .... it just died out on me and thats all it was.... as far as the starter we couldn't get it to come up due to corrosion to actually catch the spinner to turn the motor.

Thanks Grady,
I will take a look at that gasket. And for the starter. When i jumped the solinoind, it came up, but wouldnt produce any spin. I'm taking that off as well and get it bench tested, then rebuilt if that is the case.

cool keep me posted just curious and for the starter mine would come up half way and spin a bit but after i put that lube in her she fired right up may want to try that first. it will save a few bucks. Just trying to help you out i'm no mechanic by any means. but it worked for me the last 2 years. and hopefully more take care and smoothe sailing:clap:
YES, that starter shaft should be greased as part of routine maint. I WILL stick /bind and not spin/engage if not lubed and is dry.

My Evinrude did the same thing. The cone shaped fuel filter on the motor had a lot of stuff in it. The motor ran great at idle, however as soon as I advanced the throttle it would bog down. Cleaned the filter (which I had to do several times) and the motor ran great.

Before you pull the starter check you batteries and their conections. Do you have a water seperator on the boat?

A great way to tell if your fuel is good is to install a Tidewater Sensor. You can rule out fuel problems right away. Before I left my driveway last night, the last rain left a small amount of water in my uncovered oiler. (I need to put a new door on.) Quickly pumped it out and off we went.
Tidewater Sensors. Accurate. Measurement. Sensors. 757.593.3478 (http://www.tidewatersensors.com)
Other than that, Make sure your waterpump is working right. An engine that overheats will start and then stall in gear.

Used to have similar problem. turned out to be water in the fuel tank. When going up on plane, the bow-up attitude would allow the water to get to the fuel line and cause the motor to bog down. Relocated the vents from the stern to the splash-well and drained the tanks. No more problems.

Bryan-
New battery and there is a water seperator on the boat, but it is the spin off type, not the racor type.
Thanks for the replies fellas.

Needle valve stuck in seat, corrosion from phase separation. Best to disconnect the fuel line and run fuel out of the bowls when your done if the boats going to sit for a few weeks. You've got 3-2 barrel carbs. You'll see the green corrosion when you drop the bowls. Easy enough to remove and replace valves and seats. About a 4-5 beer job. I may be wrong on the diagnosis, but would bet your money on it:thumbup:

My 04 Yamaha did the same thing 1st time out this year. Idled like a champ but when I hit the throttle nothing. I tore the carbs apart soaked everything for a couple of hours in carb cleaner replaced the o rings on the bowl and mounting flange. It now runs great did not cost much. I think my problem was I did not run the motor at all last year so it had gotten pretty gumed up from sitting so long. Good Luck with your problem.
