Decided to get back out there on the water and this time we were in search of some red drum. Wind was blowing north at around 8 or 9 night was fairly calm so we headed out to Oceans East to grab some peelers and I ran into my dear friend Jerry Humphries, Jennifer, and Jerry's good friend Jim. It was about 5:45pm or so They talked about heading out offshore for tomorrow. We did some catching up and then back on the road we went. We arrived fisherman's island around 7ish. We drove around for a little bit and then I stopped the boat. Kevin said what? then I said, " right here", this is the spot. (It was that aura thing again) We anchored up and started getting out the lines. Bait was blue crab and peelers. Weight was 10 oz to 12 oz. Rig was fish finder rig and 7/0 and 8/0 hooks. I looked up after all the lines were down and there must have been at least 35 plus boats out there. Most seemed closer to the shore than us. We were more towards the mid to back area (in terms of boats) in about 21 to 20 feet of water. We got situated and then the night started to present itself.. We had a brief run that didn't yield anything and then around 9:25p, I said they are here! About 2 minutes later Kevin said man look at this big blotch on on the screen and with in another minute I had the big blotch on my line....little classic adjustment and ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. Sweet music. ( I love when that happens!) The fight was sweet the result was memorable and before I could get this one to the boat Kevin's line went off. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ another red. He grabbed the pole and started to crank and one minute later his line snapped. Apparently that one was caught up in another line now so he snipped it and got back to helping me get this red on the boat. We pulled him on the boat snapped 2 quick shots (see below) and back in the water he went. Then at 9:40p, the line went hissing Again! ZZZZZZZZZZZ! Before I could even ask Kevin if he wanted it the rod was in his hand. The girls started cheering Kevin on. They cheered, you can do it daddy, I believe in you! This was going to be his first big red. Kevin started cranking the line, this time extra cautious not to increase the tension to quickly and about 6 minutes later, he boated the fish. Everyone on board cheered. We joked around after this probably longer than we should have and about 30 minutes went by and we had set up and started to chill again. This time Katie got up and said that a certain rod was going to be next. Amazingly within 2 minutes that line went off! ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. Katie picked up the rod. It was a new reel to her (a lever drag) I tried to explain it to her but really needed to show her and before I could really help her out the knockdown was already gone. We checked the bait and only found half a crab and the fish had completely avoided the hook! Katie got one other chance about 15 minutes after this one. Again another knockdown and no fish. She was a little disappointed and we stayed a while longer, but then 15 minutes later Katie decided to call it and she said she was ok if we left cause she was getting tired. We packed up headed back towards Lynnhaven shortly after 11 p. Clara fast asleep, Kevin steering in the Captain's chair, Katie making funny faces to get me to laugh and me smiling back. I guess you could say it was classic.
P.S Jerry, Jen and Jim if you are reading this I am sorry we couldn't make it tomorrow but we can try for sometime near my birthday (15th) instead.
