A heads up in case some of you are not aware. As you are out bound OI, and passing the #3 green can on your Starboard be careful cutting down the Beach (southward) too soon. About 80-100 yards south of the marker there is a LARGE square pile sticking up from the bottom. On high tide it is only visible between the swells. On low tide it sticks out roughly 3 ft but just under the surface at other times.

Saw it three weeks ago while running in from down south and only got a glimpse, not a good enough look to really tell what we had just passed. With all the current and wave action figured whatever it was wouldn't be there long. Last weekend got a flash off it again but from a distance and only for a second. Sunday it was too rough and no one was cutting across but we got a good look. Appears to be a square pile of some type, roughly 20" across and defiantly stuck in the bottom not going anywhere.

You guys chasing the Cobia or anyone cutting down the Beach on the calm days beware!

Thanks for the warning, Jim. Maybe one of these days I'll be able to get out there.

What you've seen is the steel rigging of a trawlboat that was lost in the inlet over the winter. There is talk that one of the dredges with a crane might be trying to dig it up sometime this summer but it's not going anywhere on it's own.Be careful as it WILL ruin your day! One of my fishing buddies ( luckyduck 2) pointed it out today on our way in. It was on the outer most breakers on the shoal, bad news on a calm summer morning. Just another reason to stay on your toes at OI!

Menacing no doubt. The first day that I saw it we were not the only boat running through that area. You don't have to be that far off course or cutting that much inshore to encounter it. I have watched many boats take that route on calm days.... And the Cobia guys really need to watch for it..
