fished outgoing tide from 11-5 off windmill point light saturday w/ eels and cutbait. we only hooked 2 40-50lb rays, both on fishfinder bottom rigs(no surprise). also had what i assume to be bluefish attack a couple eels but no hook-ups.
towards the end of the tide a guy showed up and anchors right on top of the rocks at the light...........any ideas what he was fishin for ????

I've caught anything from keeper sea bass to 20 inch redfish, nice stripers, bluefish and even a 21 inch croaker directly around those rocks.

Willy B - what were you fishing for at Wmill?
I attended a cobia-fishing seminar last year and the expert commented that in days gone by cobia used to be caught at Windmill but nobody fishes them there any more because the fish are no longer there. That they'd stop going there makes no sense to me; I've never heard that the bar has changed all that much over time, and so I thought I'd see what I could find there this summer.

In the 50's and early 60's there used to be fishing tournaments for Cobia in this area and Windmill was the Hot Spot at that time. The poplulation of Cobia no longer exits as it did during that period of time.

deltaville - we were hoping for an early cobia or a striper. we were chumming and using eels...also had a couple of bottom rigs out w/ cutbait. bluefish started mauling the eels on the slack tide. that area in general has put fish in the boat for us over the last couple of years, just trying for different species in the area. makes sense to me that if other species are feeding that others may be attracted as well. i know for a fact that people have boated cobia at the mouth of the river last year, just not like they do around the tunnel/ocean.
i don't think the bar has changed all that much as far as countours/structure goes but i do think the pressures on crabs/menhaden are not the same. since i'm slipped on broad creek i will most likely keep trying different places in the area as summer wears on and temps get up. i assume by your name that you are in the same area.

A friend told me that years ago his Father caught a 98# cobia in front of Lewisetta in the Potomac!

Willy B - we are in Broad Creek as well. Twice last summer I had strong hits/runs/losses after straying accidently up onto the bar while SMac fishing. This week end is the 1st trip of the season and we're planning to chum for small blues there - just a change out of croakers. We'll put something bigger on the bottom just in case...

what I heard was there was a dog food factory in Reedville that used to just dump the leftovers straight into the bay creating a chum slick that drew them north. The EPA shut that down in the 60s and the cobia didn't come as far north. Heard this from some old timers but they could have just been pulling my leg
