Hey all left the house around 5:45 in thick fog. just getting to the 90 bridge sucked but it did clear after that. Crew was me and a friend. hit the inlet for our first run offshore. everyone has reported the fog and it did indeed suck. Waves were a bit bigger then i had hoped being in a 22ft boat. Got out the hambone around 7:50 and by 8:30 i had set out the shark rigs. just after i set out the third rig the clicker was ringing:clap:. set the hook and about 40sec later realized we had a mako. he rocketed into the air 3 times got him close the boat about 10 ft from the boat made a run and the hook pops free :nono: . Ended the day with 2 more blue sharks. Wish that mako had stayed on. ME and my friend are surely hooked on shark fishing it was a blast. only fished for about 3 hours. then headed back home. ride back was nice except my VHF ant. stand snapped even though it was a pretty smooth ride back. Gotta thank everyone that post anything about shark fishing cuz i read as much as i could and it was great info. Hopefully i will have pictures later. only cell phone ones.
Thanks Chris

Chris,
THinking about going in my 22foot center console June 27. How far was it to Hambone? Did you feel ok in your boat even though you said the waves were big.

the hambone is about 32nm. We never felt unsafe. it was a bit more freaky with the fog but radar helped that edge. once we stop it rocked a bit but it calmed down through out the morning. we averaged about 22 knots out and 27 knots back. I was in our 216 WA Sea Fox. to me sunday morning didnt seem like 2-3 foots seas looked more like 4-5 but the chop is what hurt but it was down. you would have been fine. just depends on the type of boat. the sea fox has 101 gallons and we used just over a quarter of a tank. would have been less if i had stayed down at 22knots on the way back but i wanted to burn fuel cuz i had to pull the boat to tow for the 20 hour service. send me a PM If i am down there we can buddy boat if your feeling on edge. Felt safer knowing there was at least a lot of boats out for the tourny.
thanks Chris

Sounds like you had a pretty memorable trip. The makos just love to grab some air and shake the hook loose. After successful tests on blue sharks I'm switching over to all cirlce hook rigs from now on. They are easier to remove and seem to stay point once they set in the corner. I just leave them in the holder and during the run off slide the drag lever to strike. They are also much easier to remove with a big arc dehooker.

Russ Thanks For the advise. IT worked out that the only big hooks i had for rigging were large circle hooks. It was memorable for both me and my friend. spent my summer as a youngster on a friends boat inshore fishing barely catching crap. So to get a mako hooked up the first time out offshore was pretty amazing especially on our own boat.

Chris,
I will be down there possibly June 27 th weekend, I also plan on going sometime in July and Aug. I have the same size boat as you. I have GPS, RADIO, FISHFINDER< I do not have radar. It would be great to buddy up, I fish a lot in Ches Bay and Potomac River. I have been to the African Queen wreck for some Tautog and Sea Bass. Looking to a little farther for some good pullage. Hopefully we can meet up, I would feel more comfortable going out with someone who has already been out that far.

Chris,
By the way I have a 97 2120 Robalo Center Console with a 2007 Mer 225 optimax. I have a lot confidence with her. I have been in some nasty stuff in the bay and she handles fine. I know the Ocean can be a little bigger so I just want to make sure I pick the right day.

Dan,
Sorry i never called I was a bit all over the place looking at the forecast and getting my stuff geared up. I had to put line on all night saturday cuz the ladies wanted to go out. I didnt sleep and searching for balloons at 3 am sucks. I wont be down this coming weekend do to an engagemnt party for a buddy but the following two weeks look wide open. ALso gotta get the boat back from service. Hopefully they have finish my curtains and fixed my damn VHF. next time am going just me and my buddy so we will be setting out for long trips probably head out 5:30 return 6:30 and then back out the next morning so if your doing an over nighter those weekends i can check your status.
