Let me start by saying the thumbs up is for the fact that we have some nice class fish showing daily out there from both the reports we are all seeing from the OI & PC reports as well as what I saw first hand yesterday. We had planned to fish both Sat & Sun but bagged Sat due to the unsettled morning weather & the fact that we didn't want to take a pounding in my little boat without atleast a comfirmed Sat shot/good report.

Sorry for the late report but this is the first chance I have had. Also didn't take pics but will try to get some via E-mail from the guys.

Crew: Bert,Shawn,Lindsay,Chris,Marty,Howard & me.

Fished early from the 630 in the loaded with life Tuna hole that just needs pretty water & a bit of time to get right. We spent some time but lost intrest due to the water temp & ugly color. As we pushed south we heard of a good bite developing for the Point Runner & Skilagal. We continued to work south & out looking for better water & found it in about 500 or so fathoms from the 570 south. 72.5-73+++ as the day went on with clear blue blend & with hardly any tide to speak of. By the time we arrived it was alive & busy with boats pounding the slicks. Bonita were popping up & if you hit them right would produce. As you could imagine, it was tough to get a good pass & because I had chosen to run my stick this day, I had to kind of keep my distance & work the outskirts. I also would go back to areas already worked after the heart of the fleet had moved on south to suck up a scrap or two but trust me when I say we were in the meat & had more than our fair share of perfect passes.

Well for us it was an amazing day of missed bites. Marks galore, rigger clips popping or getting jerked out of my hands while jigging my longs, danglers getting pounded with out hook up & tons of bit off Ballys. Now mind you that in with the Tuna were Bonita so It would be safe to say that many of the meat misses could have also been from them. Who knows but the Marks on the screen were the best I've seen in a good while & needless to say I was super wired & loving every minute of it. Not counting all the (likley to be just Bonita bites) I would say we should have managed atleast 10 nice Tuna. In the end we only caught 3 + a single Dolphin. We watched tons of hookups others had pulling meat only spreads way back from around the 570-530. For us it was miss after miss. It was so bad that when we got in I had Bert check one of the Bellys & sure enough guess what was in it. Other peoples Ballyhoo.:eek2:

Howard & I were talking on the way home today about what we could of done different. We had only 2 things that came to mind, Meat only & no stick??? or stop & drop on the marks with the jigs.???? Well with the marks we had I'm sure the jig could of worked but then again it was beyond impossible for me to pull them back with all that pretty stuff back there on what would seem to be a perfect pass. Well anyways, today wasn't our day for catching but it sure was one of the better days I can remember for ege of you seat hunting. Man you just had that never ending feeling that any minute we were gonna get pounded. We did manage 2 out of 3 on the stick hooked solid & that many or more that just aired & missed or would slash through but not committ & 1 out of a pile of meat bites so with these fish being nice class it proved to be enough meat for the crew.

The other intresting thing was after seeing the ballys in the stomach of one of the fish I know we caught on rubber, I looked to see what others had reported & it was intresting to see this report from Tuna Fever who apparently experinced a similar day out there on Sun.

Here is what he relayed to his wife Heather who types his reports daily. He & the Outrigger also chose to run a stick combined with closer in meat baits.

Copied & pasted from Tuna Fevers website.

This way and that way and this way again - Happy Birthday to Byron Green who caught a fat snowy grouper and a limit of tiles today.
You can probably surmise that tuna fishing was not all that today - the boys started out around the 787 and 610 and Billy says the water was military green and 69 degrees..they headed southeast ran around the Point found some 73 degree change and all the boats lined up and headed south again looking for just about anything - when they didnt find it everyone headed for the 450 and the tile hole. Byron and the boys hadn't done it before so they had a great time. Well, while the Point Runner was trolling down for the bottom bite they saw bonitas and got whammed. So everyone headed that way - and heres the deal...Billy didn't say it but everyone had bites that didn't stick. No hookups. He said it was like the tunas were playing games...well I think it was the full moon (big believer here) 15 strikes on the Tuna fever and not one fish actually ate the hook! You tell me!

Anyways  cause the Tuna are starting to show more & more + the size of all 3 of our fish were very nice compared to what it's been. I am hoping the area from the 610 north starts to get right soon cause the mammal life is awesome & it just looks fishy less the pretty water atleast as of yesterday. I see todays sats look much better so we will see by next weekend.

Good talking with Kevin,Leon,Talyor,Dave & others. See you all next weekend.

May be able to get some fun pics from the day with fish & action but most importantly of Shawn chumming to the fish gods first thing in the am in one of most calm days you could ever ask for.:D;-)

Just kidding Shawn. Staying up late & drinking too much will get ya from time to time.:helpsmilie:

Hey Bill

We saw a lot of the missed bites too. Just by the sound of the pull off, some sounded like better fish. We got covered in Falsies on one pass and got 5 releases of 9 rods but not our goal. Some of the falsies were so small they hit my planer and didn't trip it so they got dragged to death(I guess it could have been good if something bigger ate them but no love). I thought about stopping and jigging but the chaos of boats almost running each other over would have made that dangerous at to say the least. We moved away from the fleet and when we moved out of the 72F water and got down to 70F heading N we got the best fish of the day. Way better day then being at work and we didn't go home empty!!! They told me it might be a jinx because now I have my new 270qt cooler onboard for the big catch but I still hope that's not true. Maybe next trip. Martin

Not the first time you've had days like that, glad ya'll got out on Sunday and had a fun day. I know you love hearing the rigger clips pop and the sound of the reels screaming, but after last years learning curve using jigs, I'm quite surprised you didn't pull 'em back and put 'em to work. It probably would have made all the difference. It's ironic that Warren and myself were talking on Monday and the subject of jigging came up and how deadly it is and how if the marks are shallow enough it's hard to not get bit....... but it's hard to break old habits when you just "know" you'll get bit on the "next" pass. Glad to hear the tuna are starting to show in good numbers.

Sweet report... good info here... Your right it was loaded with mammals.. Had not seen them for a while.. But we only saw one flyer??
I know one thing that was one of the nicest 3-5s day.. Saw it dropped to 3-4 in the am.. we have been out in way worse on 2-4 days... And the ride is was $$$$.... Cant wait to get back out there again!!

Fishboy1, it was dangerous out there with the number of boats all trying to get on the marks, Stopping might have been fatal. Two of the OI boats almost collided and cut us off so we had to take a real sharp turn, thank goodness we didn't end up with a birdsnest in our lines or worse. The thought did cross my mind and I keep jigs in my box at all times for that exact occasion, wish now we could have tried them out. Fish balls were only 50-100 feet down so a jig would have been well within reach. I should have marked the area and come back later when the boats started to thin out. Maybe next time. We got a couple anyhow so thats the main thing and we had fun doing it. Martin

We saw flyers all day same area as the rest of the fleet, they were airing all around us most of the day...they were out there...Also saw a BIG shark sunning just outside the fleet, I don't know sharks, but it was big, made a big splash and disappeared when we pulled up to him

Martin, you showed great courtesy and wisdom by not stopping and dropping your jigs in the middle of the fleet. It definately would have caused mayhem and would have angered many private and charter boats. Thanks for using common sense.

I was just reading Bill's report and bringing up a topic that he and Howard were talking about on the way home, jigging. From what I read it seems that Bill had room enough around the outside to pull the stick and still get some very good marks. So if there was room for that, and he second guessed himself on the ride home for not stopping and jigging, I'm sure that if the decision was made to stop and jig by any Rec's, it would be done in a professional manner. My reply was only about jigging and shouldn't be made into somethng more than what it is, sense it's heading in the wrong direction.

I think Capt Nemo must of been mostly talking about the boats working the fresh stuff to the southern of where we fished. I never even tried to stay with the heart of the pack. There was plenty to fish between the 578-560 & only a third as much traffic except early in the am. I mentioned down to the 530 in my report for info's sake but never actually made it below 560. The point Peddler & Nemo are trying to make are valid & should be discussed since I would have to agree that in areas where the fleet are working tight it is not possible to stop and jig. If a man hooks a fish than that is understood as part of the game but going against the grain of the majority in tight quarters is not acceptable. Kinda like when I was younger, we praticed every week for the following weekend's motorcross races @ our local pits & every day one of us would establish a route/loop & after that everybody had to pretty much stay on the same page. One day a new guy tried to reverse a blind jumps direction & it ended with that guys eyeball inside an others handlebar. Plugged it right out. I'll never forget it.

If I were to have chosen to jig it would of been a quick stop from time to time exactly on a mark or when cranking in another hooked fish from troll or stick. It would obviously have had to been in an area where I had room to do so. I think it is important to understand that unlike drift jigging down at the Horse pen, to catch a Tuna on a jig, you have to stop exactly on a mark & quickly bounce a jig on there heads or otherwise it's a complete waste of time. A post was made a while back to attempt to warn guys about being careful when attempting to jig near trolling boats & it is a valid one for sure. You have to use a good deal of common sense when and when not to drop them & always remember that the time to pratice learning a new technique is not in (OPF) others peoples fish. I hope you guys reading this understand what I mean when I use the OPF phrase. The fleet located this area & had already established the days pattern so going against the grain might end up with someone's eye in anothers socket.:D

Just use common sense & everyone will survive the madness.

Bill then u outa fish out OC when the bft are there. U got guys, charters included, dumping 80's and then stopping on marks and jigging. U try to set up a troll pattern 2 safely take u a freakin mile behind a boat and then u got guys stopping dead all over the place and u end up w/no place 2 go. The radio sounds like a cussin match. Try it 1 time and u won't go back, I personally fish 4 fun.

Good post guys. Near the end of the day several OI boats started jigging and casting on a large school. I think everyone worked well out there together and you just had to be on your toes and predict what the other boats were going to do. I know I busted on Bill on Billable Hours for following me around twice on this school where my long baits where just under his bow. After I talked with him he was evry cool and backed off a little.

Bill like you we pushed South of everyone and had good fishing.

Here was the one that got Dave Peck and I scratching our head. We were working the area with Point Runner and a real nice school poops up with several large and small birds working it and a white outboard comes screaming in to pass right over the school. I am up in the tower trying to wave them off and Dave is talking on the radio trying to get them to back off. Well they ran right thru the middle of it and Stopped right in the middle of this football feild size school. Luckily they stayed up and we got covered up, but remember getting there fast may cuase you to miss something like they did.

Hey Terp, hows it going. I have read the stuff you OC guys go through & all I can say is why??? If it were me I would drive my arse down to the OBX during the winter months & charter a boat and get more & better shots in one day than you would all summer long in that mess. Sounds even worse than Stripe Mullet or Spade fishing out of Ruddee inlet on a calm weekend.

Heck Terp, if your afraid the Miller light is weaker from NC you can always pack a trunk load down from MD.;-)

Sooner or later you boys will make it back over the high rise without turning around.:D

Bill, u know us MD guys appreciate what u go through for your crews. I was also going 2 mention that outa OC u can't "beat everyone else" out there. We always smile about u:

us: Hey Bill, what time we leavin in the morning?
Bill: Let's get up around 4a.
us: sounds good

3a comes and Bill bangs on the door...

us: I thought u said 4a?
Bill: I couldn't sleep, too freakin amped! Let's go!!!

Even then u'd be about the 20th boat in line outa OC.

Bill, your right on the money as usual. Everyone should understand that this is not a charter v private boat issue. Many of the charter boats also try jigging from time to time but dont do it in a tight group of boats that have established a pattern. I'd really like to see the day that private and charter boats can coexist peacefully and this type of discussion could go a long way towards that goal. I also hate the term "charter v rec". Remember, charters are recreational fishermen too. As far as OPF, is that like OPP?

Ha Ha Ha Terp... Ain't that the truth
I will never forget setting lines in the dark and barely making out the Wahoo launching out of the water chasing the flat line.... I think I had just asked Bill 10 sec before about how many fish he had caught that early on the troll.
Sure miss drinking Ml on the Fancy
