Most GPS machines can be set to Loran numbers. Check your manual. The easy way is to buy a paper chart with Loran lines on them. All Tackle, or any good tackle store should have them.

Several years ago I lost my chart with loran numbers on it. Looked around and all I could find were charts with Lat-Lon. Last year I contacted GMCO Maps and Charts in Garrisonville, VA., who makes most of the waterproof charts sold in tackle shops, and they informed me that when they narrowed the GPS lines on the new charts, the loran lines made it to cluttered. They decided to do away with the loran lines and go with the GPS smaller lines for better accuracy. If you have a chart with loran lines on it hold onto it because you may not be able to replace it. Good luck in finding one and if you do please let me know. Thanks

Not sure what chartplotter you have but most you can display TDs and lat/long by going into your system setup. I have a Raymarine C120 and it's under system setup. To be reasonably accurate you need some additional settings. For my C120 in the VB area, I use these additional settings.

Chain = 9960, Northeastern US
Slave 1 = Y, Carolina Beach
Slave 2 = X, Nantucket
ASF1 = 2.2
ASF2 = 3.2

Since it's not a loran receiver, just a mathmatical conversion, you won't find a wreck or anything but it will allow you to communicate with other offshore anglers as to where you are. Folks might just say I'm on the 550 at 50 fathoms. Take a look at this SST shot from oceantemp (it's an old shot so don't get excited).

Notice the numbers on the far right. Those are you loran TDs. Folks might say what is your 4 line. No need to say 41550 so folks just say 550 (because the 40550 line is 100 miles away). This line runs over the Norfolk Canyon. Some folks might say I'm on the 550 at say the depth like 50 fathoms. Or you can give the 2 line. Notice the 2 lines at the very top of the SST chart. Again, no need to say 26800, just say 800. So you might hear I'm on the 550 and 800. Using this chart, you can quickly have a good idea where he is fishing. And even if you don't have a chart like this onboard, you can quickly run your cursor over until you find his spot (as long as you are displaying TDs). If anyone said a GPS coordinate on the radio, we would have to stop, write it down, and plot it out....that takes too much time. This is why loran numbers are used by offshore anglers even though most don't have a loran receiver.

Good luck out there.
