If I understand the changes correctly.... we get a youth deer day and are allowed to use rifles for deer and bear in the whole county of Suffolk. Way cool.

The way I understand it my 7 year old get's to hunt the Saturday before Bow season with a Rifle and can shoot the biggest un-molested un-hunted buck in the field before the rest of the world get's a chance! Now that is cool!

Hope you are correct, but I'm under the impression that rifle is an option of the counties or cities. Reason being that the Board of Sups. in Charles City County voted rifles out.
Does VDGF have the authority and take advisement or is it local option?
Anyone know how it really works???

References are made throughout the regs to check local ordnances for restrictions.

I think Suffolk has different regs for which side of the Dismal Swamp line you are on.

Are the laws too complex in VA? I do a lot of hunting in NC and never have a question of whether I am completely legal or not. I really think the VDGIF goes a great job of managing the resources but when the members of this website can't understand the changes, we have an issue. This reminds me of the flounder regulations changing every year and a moriturium on catching them one week in August? :eek2: I really do appreciate their efforts and salute the youth deer day.

rifle hunting in suffolk sounds great.. they don't stand a chance now. This should cause more comotion than a little but when opening day of rifle season sounds the the 4th of july..We should have a hunters board shootout sometime in august. We'll shoot clay pidgeons, set targets out 500 yards for the rifles and have the bowhunters have a shootout..

Rifle hunting (East of the defined Dismal Swamp Line) has been allowed in Suffolk for many years. And... you ain't hittin' anything at no 500 yards anyway Charlie. Dream on!

The biggest changes I see are in the either-sex days in many counties. Basically, if it's brown, it's down from opening of bow to the end of season in all the counties I hunt.
Also, they are allowing you to have a muzzleloader in your possession during the overlap of bow and black powder. Don't see that as doing much, since I put the bow away once blackpowder comes in anyway.
