Pulled 20 pots in mouth and only four. 2 paper 2 mudders. Got checked by APG and got the 100% saftey check. Usually the only test I pass is a drug test. So I motored back in and threw the 4 boys over at Maxwell hoping they will knock on doors and wake up their buddies. Sorry guys looks like July out there at best. But then again the GP never has any decent crabs anyway.:cool2:

Hopefully it will get better soon just wish this darn rain would go away.
I have lived on the Gunpowder River for 30+ years. The crabbing has not been good in the river for at least 15 years.:eek2:
Now before anyone tells me I'm crazy let me explain:D
The river use to be alot deeper. This is important when it comes to sustaining a good population of large quality male crabs.
Now the river in most areas at best is around 6-8 feet @ high tide unless you go out towards the mouth.
The river has now become a breeding ground for sluffing crabs. This is why there are alot of whiteys or light crabs. They come into the river to sluff or hook up with a female. over the last several years I have noticed an increase in doublers.
The gunpowder is very similar to Thompson's creek. If you have ever crabbed there its also very shallow with the average depth @ 8 ft. Most crabs you catch there are also very light and you catch alot of doublers.
Now if you crab the Wye and the Chester like I do now, you will notice that both of these rivers are very deep and thats why you see alot better quality in the rivers more often
'
Now every river has light crabs from time to time, thats just crabbing. But if you want quality go to the Wye or the Chester
Now I'm not saying that the Gunpowder River is a bad river to crab but over the years it has gotten worse.
Its very important that the people who do crab the Gunpowder understand that its so important to throw back all of the # 2's and papershells you catch so that come September and early october that there will be some nice crabs to be had:thumbup:
I would rather drive 2 hrs each way to catch quality crabs then catch junk in my backyard.
Also if you look @ the Bush River its also alot deeper then the Gunpowder. You will catch alot of mudders in the bush. The problem with that river now is the taste of the crab is not very good, but I do remember catching 2 bushel a day of 8 inch mudders for weeks at a time
Good Luck to everyone .
My .02 cents

Yep, what Lily said....at least about the Bush.
We crabbed it last year, action wasn't fast but they were big and heavy
don't know that the taste was off, we thought they were good
