I have always pulled the speckled skin membrane off the squid before cutting it up into strips. Does this make any difference ? I would think the fish don't care about the membrane, looks like food to them.
I was with a charter captain once and he took whole squid and sliced it cross-wise so that he made squid rings. We caught plenty of fish.
Lastly, do croaker bite on the squid heads as well as they do on the strips?
Want to see what others on this board do/think.

I'm with the charter captian. When trying to catch big croaker the bigger the bait
the better. I call it squid chunks and also I will use the entire squid head. The
croaker will find the hook. Squid is cheap and it's easier for croaker to find
the bigger bait. Now these are just my opinions and I'm sure others feel differently
about it, but I catch lots of fish.
I used to fish with a guy that would sit at come and cut his "perfectly cut" squid
strips. Looked good but he never caught fish. He stopped using "perfectly cut"
squid strips and started buying fish bites twenty packs at a time. One pack
would last him a season but he did start catching tiny spot.

I fished at the Bay Quarter Shores near Cod Creek over Memorial Weekend, caught a nice mess of croaks- the larger fish seemed to prefer the squid heads. I think the bigger the bait the better for the croaks IMHO.

I agree with the Squid Head Theory. We always seem to catch the Biggest Croaker
on the Squid Head. The rest of the Squid I cut in strips.

When we go out fishing, the first piece of squid my wife uses is the head, she will sometimes have the heads on both hooks on a bottom rig. I always use chunks.

A trick I use is, I use the large white cleaned squid. I thaw it and cut into
1/2 " strips and soak a day or 2 in vannilia extract, then re-freeze, from
the 1/2" strips cut the size you want to use..The strips will be about 7" long
and will yeild alot of baits..At the end of the day, simply re-freeze whats left..
Doesn`t stink to high heaven like the boxed squid does and won`t spoil from the
heat either..

Squid head on the top hook and squid strip as white as you can get it and 4-5 inches long and pennant shaped(flounder). The squid ring thing works great for outsized croakys too. Try some fresh cut spot for outsized croakys if you get the chance. Cut the fillet from dorsal to belly in pennant shapes rather than from gill to tail.

Try using frozen shrimp that you get at the super market. Food Lion has buy one get one free sales that make it fairly cheap bait. You can keep them for months in your freezer. Thaw them out and remove the shell. If they are large cut them in half, if medium use the whole thing. Other than blood worms, me and my charter customers caught more croaks on shrimp than just about any other bait. The real deal is blood worm on one hook and shrimp on the other. Next best would be shrimp and squid or peeler crab. Just my humble opinion.

June bug spinner with a 3-4 inch section of fishbites bloodworm ,with a 2-3 ounce inline sinker, pretty good at catching big croker.
