I have 3 Summer time favorites
4" charteuse swimming mullet with 1/4 oz red jig head--deadly on anything and a classic color combo
6" pearl white jerk shad Texas rigged with a worm hook--the flounder kinda like this one
4" rootbeer swimming mullet with a weighted worm hook-- it's a little tough to get the hook right but a good weedless pup rig.

I've had good luck with the 7" Assassin gulps on either a 2 oz jighead (deeper water) or even on a flounder rig (instead of cut bait). Chart/while or all Chart.

I use jig heads from 1/2oz to 2oz depending on current/drift speed. Obviously some of the smaller baits look a little goofy on the 2oz jig heads, so I usually end up using the bigger baits when I need that much weight.
- 5" jerk shad in nuclear chicken
- 4" chartruse or white swimming mullet
- 3-4'" pogies in white or any of the blue/white varieties
- 6" bait swimmer in any of the blue/white colors. (BIG BAIT: gotta let them chew on it for about 15 seconds before hook set)
- 3-4" shrimp work fine in most colors but not as well as the previous baits.
Nuclear chicken was the hot color a few weeks ago. I havent been out for flounder since. Stiff graphite rod and 10-15lb braid is neccessary for optimal depth control and feel. If there is any substantial current/drift speed you can forget about holding bottom with mono. Not gunna happen! With braid I can literally feel the fish chewing their way up the larger baits.
I'm a sucker for anything colored " New Penny".. Shrimp work better for me.

We fished "New Penny" shag on 1/4" jig heads two weeks ago and caught over 20 flounder in 30 minutes. Sadly, all were shorts, but fun none the less.

I've heard of that school. Didn't they used to play football in the Big 12? :D

haha OUCH!
That hurts. Id say the rolls are reversed from the 90's...we were winnin championships and OU stopped playin football also. Hopefully we'll both be successful at the same time before too long. I love the old NU OU rivalry and hope we'll start meeting again on a yearly basis for the conference championship. Gotta get teams like Mizzou and UT back where they belong!
PS...sorry for the threadjack. I cant help myself when it comes to Husker stuff!

Shallow water favorites
4" Chartruese swimming mullet on a red jighead
3" and 4" Baitfish in smelt color with red jigheads rigged tandem
Deeper water like jigging bridge pillings
7" Jerkshad on a 2oz jighead
If you haven't tried this you are missing out. I have caught more keeper flounder jigging gulp jerkshads than any other way this year as well as last year. The last time we went a friend went with us and asked before what could he get from Greentop to bring along, I told him to pick up some 7" Gulp Jerkshads in neon chartruese. Well when we got on the water the next morning and started fishing he pulled out bucktails to try. I asked him did he get any gulps and his exact words were " There ain't no Flounder worth me spending $7 for 4 soft plastic baits." Well after Tim and I had put 6 in the box and he had only caught one dink he sucked it up and asked if we had any he could use. They are the real deal. They ain't cheap but fishing is kinda expensive anyway and if I can find something to give me a better chance to enjoy my trip then I'm all over it.

How do they hold up? Would a 4 pack last you for a half day trip or so?

It really depends on a number of factors. As we all know, flounder have some serious teeth and they can shred a bait pretty well, especially when they are flaring around while you try to pull he hook out. However, even with this happening I can usually catch quite a few fish on the same baits with a little bit of rehooking at times. Some of the baits, such as the 5" jerk shad, tend to be a litle more fragile and may only work well for 3 or 4 fish.
The real problem is BLUEFISH! Ive gone through $30 of gulps in a couple hours time due to those freakin things. It definately hurts that wallet if the blues are active, which they usually are this time of year. Croaker can also do alot of damage to the baits. Those things absolutely crush gulps and can tear them up pretty good.

Not if the Flounder are hungry.

Get some plastics... learn to feel soft strikes and different retrieves... Don't buy GULP! and save the money to put your kids through school or buy a boat.

Soft plastics may work at times, but as someone else said, Gulp is "THE REAL DEAL". I used it just yesterday after trying the soft plastics first and there was no comparison. As soon as the bait hit the bottom, the flounder were tearing it up. Yes, it's expensive, but it is so effective. 4" chartreuse swimming mullet on a red jighead is the ticket for me.

Do they really preform better than live bait?

I think gulps out performs live bait due to the fact that it requires you to fish them. Many times with live bait you cast your bait out and let it sit or you drift. With Gulps you may make ten casts to the live bait's one. With gulp you influence the action of the bait where with live bait you depend on the action of the bait itself. Gulp makes you a more proactive, aggressive fisherperson.
I've found seabass and flounder love the 4" Chartruese swimming mullet bait. Tried squid on one hook and the mullet on the other with the majority of the fish taking the mullet. Think they like the motion of the tail. Which unfortunately the smaller one will bite off.

Do you just tie the jighead on the end of your line or do you Y rig with sinker or Carolina rig. Are they really better than gudgeons.

I just use the jighead. When the current is running really hard and you cant get down with just a jig head Im sure you can use a 3-way, but I usually just wait for the current to die down or I move shallower.
Some people swear by gudgeons and I used to use them, but havent touched them in a couple of years. 75% of the flounder fishing I do is jigging with gulps. The other 25% is fishing with live spot and bluefish strips at the CBBT.
There is not one perfect way to catch flounder. Jigging with light tackle around the bridges is just the way I prefer to do it. Plenty of people like drifting open water structure with flounder rigs and gudgeons/strip baits and are very successful....Im just not one of those people.

What type of jig heads are most of you using?
BGonsoulin

Use any jighead that'll get you to the bottom the lighest. Usually 3/4 oz will do the trick all day but def 1 oz in deeper water.

White or chartreuse swimming mullet in 3 or 4 inch on a jig head sizes from 1/4oz to ¾ oz also fished the swimming mullet for flounder from a boat on a Carolina rig.
For the longest time I was not a believer until a friend started out catching me while I was fishing with artificial lures.
I’ve had Gulps last all day and some lasted for just one cast. A toothy critter will destroy a Gulp with just one bite Ouch.

I use a 1oz or 1 1/2oz (depending on current) swiveled bannana weight followed by 20-26" leader then a 2/0 worm hook tipped with a 5" pearl white jerk shad. Slow rolled and have gotten flounder, croaker, spot, blue, stargazer, and puppy drum. Have lost count on the ammount of flonder I have taken this month alone with this set up.
