Anyone sweating the thunderstorms out of Oc tomorrow? I can't get a good feel for the severity of the forecast. What are your thoughts?

Russ,
It is a toss up to dodge the storms on Saturday or deal with the wind and waves on Sunday.
Done both and Ill take dodging the storms this weekend

I was thinking of starting at the hambone for a bft and working out to the poormans later . the offshore canyon forcast looks iffy , but did see a model that called for 5ft swell mostly . with 25 ft more lenght we can fish in snotty weather , just do not like getting the butt whipping if we don't need to . will have the owners daughter onboard and she is 4yrs old , so will try to take it easy .

We had our charter cancel b/c of the forecast. So I'm sitting this weekend out. The weather will only get worse as the day goes on, Saturday. Just 'cause it, "ain't so bad" on the way out, doesn't mean it won't be bad on the ride home.

So how dangerous is getting hit by lightning? Obviously you don't want to be in the tower (or touching it). What happens when a boat is struck?

Forget the lightning, you don't want to be in a heavy cell ... the seas can get pretty big, the winds gets really high (try 50K +), the visibility goes to zero. Especially you want to avoid a squall line, BC there's no place safe to go. While lightning does hit occasionally, it's not very common. The best you can do is lay down the riggers and stay off the metal.

Only being 27 feet doesn't give us alot of room for error when they are calling for 5 ft. plus and thunderstorms. I think we may have to call this one off.

Great. So what the F are we gonna do? I got like 6 guys waiting on me to make the call. I know I'm gonna make the wrong call either way, just my luck. The way I see it is that they're only calling for the chance of thunderstorms to cover they're asses. Whenever it's hot and humid like it's going to be there is a chance of thunderstorms to pop up. I just don't want to be this guy is all I know:boat:

Don't get me wrong Lance, I am fishing! Just looking for some input. Hope to be able to avoid any storms. Either way I am going to end up somewhere south between 20 and 100 fathoms.

Man this one is a tough call. The more I look the more I think it might not be so bad. I think we are going to watch the buoys and make a late call.

Just to make matters worse they decreased the wind inshore and increased the thunderstorm severity.

I was on the 50-fa line when a boat was struck, once. He lost his electronics & his engines cut out (or he shut them off & couldn't re-start them). Anyway, he had a hand-held VHF & the other boats in the area helped him out. That was a scary day. Lightning was everywhere, all day.

Ended up being a real nice day weatherwise but could not raise the tuna. My screen was lit up all day once we got to Masseys and couldnt get a pull, Tried stopping and jigging right on top the fish and NADA. Flat calm and sunny at Masseys
Threw out the chum bucket in and tried for a mako and nothing.
Picked up and headed inshore so the kids could get some action and loaded up with sea bass. We forgot the to untie the chum bucket when we pulled up but set 2 shark rods in anyway with bluefish fillets. (now it was raining)
In the midst of catching so many seabass the long float just started screaming and the big thresher was on for about 2 minutes. Bit right in the middle of my 2 hooks as I ended up with little chunks of the bluefish fillet on the top and bottom hooks.

Went out of Wach and came right through a storm. We ran right through a band about 3-4 miles of 40+ winds, lightning, and zero visabilty. The wind was so strong it actually blew the waves down. Before we got to the storms we listened to a charter boat give us a play by play as he was going through and told his buddy that he may want to wait it out. That sort of freked me out. We were on a 23 ft boat, I could not imagine if there were 5-7 footers in there. On the other side there were blue skies and a choppy sea.
Oh yeah we caught over 20 yellowfin, 10 keepers.
