My cousin is in the commercial seafood buisness. I stopped by his place yesterday and he told me that one of the guys he buys fish from has pound nets at the concrete ships area.

When he checked his nets a couple of days ago he counted a dozen Bull Sharks in them. He said they were in the 200#+ range. Something to think about if you are over that way and swimming off the beach.:eek2:

having more than our share of Bulls down here...I can verify that they LOVE to feed in shallow water "as in where people like to swim" we catch them almost ervery trip when fishing in the shallows near the bridged, which is where the Tarpon congregate

My buddy was cobia fishing over there last week and hooked up a decent size Hammerhead. Sounded like it came back to the boat several times later afterwards , maybe wanted revenge!

Over spring break, my daughter was in Florida kayaking with a friend in a canal. They were enjoying the solitude and beauty of nature while paddling in shallow water when suddenly they saw a large swirl, then an explosion that drove my daughter and her kayak about 3 feet out of the water into the air with a volcano of water around her. Of course both of them were stunned and they saw something large quickly swimming away. She was an intern at a Dolphin resuce place so she knew it wasn't that, and the locals assured her that it was a bull shark.

Kayak on dudes!!!!

The fish cleaning station at Kiptopeake is like an all day chum station.

The shark in the picture looks like a big Lemon. Both fins are about the same size.

the pict doesn't show for me ...but we have Bulls and Lemons a plenty and if the two fins are even close toi the same size it's a Lemon,,,,on a bull significantly smaller

I was fishing inside the concrete ships a few years ago in a 17' CC. Looked down in time to see a shark a good 10 feet long swim about 3 feet under the boat...There are some very large sharks in that area this time of year. As I hear it, the sand tigers, duskys, sand bars and black tips are inland right now giving birth to live young. The bulls follow them in to feed on their babies. I know the deep creeks around Queen Sound are full of sharks about now...

I am not familiar with how pound nets work. What happens to the sharks caught in the nets? Killed, released or kept?

I will be vacationing in Cape Charles next week with my family and this thread is just a reminder that you never know what is lurking just off shore or right next to shore. I know all the statistics about a shark attack being less likely then getting hit by lightening etc., but I have to say I will be keeping a close eye on the water next week. Anyway, Iam sure the sharks have been told by the local chamber of commerce not to harrass the tourists and therefore avoid the Cape Charles public beach.

Those are bull sharks and sand tigers, pupping(live birth) in VERY shallow water. they are really big probably cousins to those seen in the pound nets. i had one come as close to touching the boat as one could "comfortably" imagine.

Since I will be kayaking and fishing around Cape Charles next week I was just wondering what one should do if you see or encounter sharks while on a kayak. First, not interested in catching them. Are you better to stay still and let them pass or to try and paddle away?

I kayak fished out of the Wise Point ramp yesterday and had a big one jump about 30' away from the boat. Sounded like someone threw a cow out of a pine tree when it splashed back down. Saw the same thing 2 weeks ago in that area. A little later, one surfaced 4' away which kinda got my attention. Left the area shortly after that (but not before at least trying to interest him in an eel on a float rig , but no dice). On another note, flounder were scarce over that way, did better on the Bay side this week.
