Gonna take my son and couple of his buds , fishing Wed AM. Think about putting in at Poqouson. Or Fort Monro. Never tried the Fort Marina. Any suggestions from you guys, or Gals down that way would be greatly appretiated.Thinking, mabe, Spanish,or the reef for Cobia.I normally fish upper bay to the cell.

Thanks in advance !

I would only use the Ft Monroe ramp if you are planning on fishing the HRBT or Hampton bar.. It's really small, not free (only $5 but still), you have to go through security to get on base (although it's not really bad) and the parking is not all that great.

IMO, the Poquoson ramp at Messick is far superior.

Hey Wes,
Thanks for that info. Need any input I can get. Want to make this a fun trip. No stress,if possible.I've been out of Messick before.Just don't quite know where to put some lines in the H2O. I know a lot of people on TF are in and around that area.

If you put in at Messick your right on some of the best cobia fishing grounds. You'll see all the boats as soon as you come out of Back River. Bring some chum and a few eels and find a spot in the parking lot to set up. Pick up a few croaker and add them to the spread as well. Good luck and hope you have a great day.

If you want to make sure your crew gets on some fish, Id launch from Ft. Monroe and hit the HRBT for flounder and croaker. Jig heads and gulp baits work great for both in the area.

Check out these posts for all the info you need to target fish there.

I figured Id throw that advice in there just in case cobia/spanish fishing may be a bit slow paced (not sure how old your son and his friends are). Its a pretty short ride north up to buckroe and the bluefish rock area if you want to try cobia also. West is right about using Messick if your goal is strictly spanish and cobia, it is a nicer ramp and closer to the more popular areas for those species on this side of the bay.

Hey , Wes, & Matt.
Thank you both for taking the time to respond to my request.I do like that Fort Monroe , caught a lot of small flatties, there last summer.Gonna have to flip a coin, if I don't get any more suggestions. You guys know, with the expense of hauling from richmond and everything else,I need to do all the Intel, I can first. My retirement check, isn't going as far as I thought it would. Kinda puts the cramps on my fishing.

if you're gonna fish around fort monroe/buckroe/hrbt, you might check out sunset boat ramp. its close to fort monoe, free and no security to go through. only two ramps but its seldom busy during the week. i'll be going out of there tomorrow for cobia myself i think so might see you on the water.

i just went out of Messick this morning and took the ride around the bend to the HRBT. Its a tick over 7 miles. And the bite, there was no bite. Fished the Hampton Bar to with no results. If your gonna go out of Messick for some flatties and want ta short ride. Only 2 miles to Back River Reef straight out the river.
