I am tired of getting the damn run around everywhere I go. I don't know who to trust and what to believe. I just keep pissing away $$$ with very little or no results. Can someone please point me to someone who has a F#%**N clue about how to "properly" diagnose and repair a damn outboard motor????
The boat itself is in very good condition and I know what ever the issue is the engine has can not be rocket science.
Just somebody that has some real experience and can be trusted!!
Please help

What's wrong with your motor? What have they told you?

Where are you located? Short's Marine has an outstanding mobile mechanic, Greg Biener, who I have used for over five years. I've done a lot of outboard work myself, so I consider myself a rather harsh critic and this guy is impeccable in his approach to trouble shooting and repairing.

i Live in richmond, but the boat stays on ES most of the year.
I will take it where ever I need to take it just to get it fixed!!! (right I might add)
!st it does not like to idle so I'm thinking carbs or something need ajusted or maybe even rebuilt. ok fine no problem. 2nd and really the most agravating is I can't get it to tach out like it used to. I used to run 5200 wide open, 38-40 knots slick water Now it's 4500 -4700 at best same water and about 30-32 knots. I have been told to change props I had a 19 and we changed it to a 17 still not much better. They have been through it and say maybe it's this or maybe it's that. Lastly something a little bit irritating is you will be running wide open when all of a sudden the rpms drop and it's pissing me off. It don't do it all the time just when it feels like it. I can put in a kiptopeke and run out to the light tower and run back no problem, next day do it again and it starts acting up.
Whatever it is 2 boat mechanics in rich 1 in va beach and another in cape charles don't seem to be able get a handle on it.
The boat is a 23' CC and for the most part looks and fishes great it's that damn Johnson. I am an HVAC technician I know heatpumps & furnaces ect.. I dont know nothing about these motors :helpsmilie:

Have you replaced the water seperator? I'd also take loose the gas line and pump out 1/4 to 1/2 gallon of gas into a clear jar to see if you have any water in you fuel. With the problem coming and going and the rough idle it sounds like a fuel issue.

Sounds like your plugs are fouling Do likewhat was posted previously pull your water seperator and inspect the fuel for water then check the plugs starting from the bottom and look for fouling usally one causes the other.... The last choice would be somthing in th power pack but sounds more like a fuel issue. Also look for black speck in the fuel when you dump the filter might be your fuel lines breaking down with the ethenol clogging things up.

thanks for your responses guys, I have replace the fuel line from the tank to the motor and still a problem. I will try and pull some fuel out and check to see how it looks. Where can I get water detecting paste? thought about sticking the tank.

It's very easy to see if have have any water by putting the fuel in a clear glass jar. The water and fuel will separate into distinct layers. You don't need any paste.

I have the same motor and I am curently working on why my RPMs have dropped as well. I can only get 4500 rpm and 23KTS out of her 24wa. I was told to ck the water sep. change the plugs and finaly to ck the carbs to make sure the jets are clear. I'll be doing that this weekend. Let me know if you find anything out.
Thanks
Ted

Checking the plugs is important. If you have a couple cylinders running lean you could really run into problems, since the fuel is also the lubricant.

Any oil company has the water detecting paste. The one we used is brown turns red in water. Maybe your tank has phase seperated. Dump it pump, it and start over.

I highly recommend Short's Marine in Delaware. It's a little bit of a drive but well worth it. They do the work correctly the first time.
Good luck and please let us know how things turn out.

Well I was out therte this mourning going through everything, changed the plugs again and started motor and was waching things, I noticed that I had fuel pouring out of this little hole on the carb. (see pic below) what does this mean? and what is that hole for?
I hate boat motors, lol

Looks like a vent for the carb float bowl. Fuel from there may mean the float needle valve is not shutting off. I wouldn't continue to try running the motor, BC of the fire danger. You need a mechanic. I again would suggest Greg Biener from Short's Marine in Millsboro, DE. He'll come to your dock/house.

Francis Guy - Guy Brothers Marine, Clements, MD. Honest, fair, local people. Best OMC Mechanic around. Quit wasting time, drop it off, come back, pay your bill and go fishing.
My 200 HP Johnson would not build up RPM's. I tried the whole plugs, filter, bulb and blah, blah, blah. Francis found a coil "weeping" onto the timing linkage under the flywheel and lubricated it and voila, runs like a raped ape. Problem fixed. You will get 100 responses from internet mechanics, but it takes a guy who does it every day to fix it right.
Francis Guy is your man.

Try Robert Kammar in Edgewater near Rhode River Marina. He is a retired Evenrude/Johnson Master Certified Mech. He is always looking for side work to supplement his social security. He doesnt drive anymore so you will have to bring it to him but he is good and honest.
