Would one of these work for spades and sheeps or will they not let you get close enough?

Yeah - it'll work. Spades at the CLT usually swim close enough to touch, as they do most other places I've found them. Most of the one I've take out there are with a pole spear. Only reason I use the speargun on spades is to justify it's expense.

The problem with a pole spear or sling is that if you try to take down a large spade, you run the risk of loosing it, unless you have it tethered to you. Use a spear gun with a thick shaft and hang on. A large spade will pull. For spades while snorkeling, I use an AB Biller 36 special. For bottom fish while diving, I use an OMAR.
