I have friend that is fishing the Rapp with some buds for the first time above tappahannock. They just bought a 18' center and would liek to get some pullage. I guess the boat is rack stored in a marina 10-15 miles down the river from Tapp. Any suggestions on places for them to start looking?

If you're above the bridge at Tappahannock everyone aboard will need a freshwater fishing license. Below the bridge a saltwater license is necessary. That bridge is the line between where a freshwater and a saltwater license are required.

Fishing between Port Royal and Tappahannock you can catch channel catfish and the occasional blue catfish. I've heard that the blues can get pretty big but I've never caught one but then I've never targeted them. For catfish stick to the outside bends of in the river and put your bait into the deepest hole.

If you're going to target croakers and spot fish on the bottom with bloodworms or squid (although expensive bloodworms will produce the most bites). Fish along the contour edges or among the crab pots if there are any there. Make sure not to hook the pots though!

For either species a standard double hook bottom rig is probably the easiest setup.
They're available at Wal-Mart.
