Went diving in the Chesapeake Bay about 2 miles north of the bridge near Annapolis,Md.

A friend lost an anchor so I went tio see if I could find it. His spot is popular with fishermen and when I got there - 3-4 boats were chumming for Rockfish. As the current went slack - they pulled anchor and left. Cownose rays were drawn to the chumlines - it was not good to see these critters as I donned my gear. The rays often bump into me and with the viz. under 1 foot - I never see them coming. Spooks me every time it happens.

The area has old telephone cables and I figured this is what my buddy lost his anchor to. He told his son to tie a bleach bottle to the line - then cut it loose. A jugged anchor is simple to retrieve. Well, his son got it backwards and cut the line first. The current pulled the boat away before the boy could jug it.

We dragged a grapple over the numbers until it snagged and over I went. Water is warm and had 2-3 feet viz. until 20 feet - then it gets dark and viz. drops off to 1 foot or less. Followed the cable along the bottom and found two anchors but not the one I was after.

Current started to pick up and it really rips in this area so I called it a day. The rays did not bother me although I did see some huge mud puffs on bottom from ones I spooked.

I plan to try again for my friend's anchor - wish I had better viz. but that is how it is up here.
