Tonight was about as fine a river night as you can find. I launched my kayak in Weems Creek at 6:45 and headed out to the river. I turned left and paddled up to Whitehurst Lake, a little tidal pond just below Saltworks Creek. I have enjoyed fishing here for the past few years. I caught several very active white perch in 3' of water. The way they swam back and forth after hitting the lure, I thought I might have gotten a small pickerel. I worked the shoreline of the pond until 8:00 when I realized I needed to head back to the ramp by dark. I trolled two small soft plastics on the way back. Just off Luce Creek, one rod started shaking. I wound it in to find a tiny bluefish (6" to 8"), my first of the year. The plastic tail on the other rod had been bitten off. I reset the trolling poles and continued back to the ramp, but had no more catching.

The water looked pretty good for mid July (1' to 2' visibility in most places).

If I am up early enough tomorrow morning, I will head back out for an hour or two before heading to PA around 10:00.

that sounds fun John, Glad you got some pullage.

I took the wife and my boys down to Annapolis tonight for an ice cream run. There were 2 die hard Yak's fishing the rocks at the corner to head into the Annapolis harbor. I was surprised to see them braving the big boat wakes coming in on a Friday evening. They were casting and trolling. One of the guys said they were using live spot and had picked up a couple small ones (not sure if he was talking Rock or Blue or what...)

you can take some pretty big wakes with a decent kayak. Not one of those little 9' tubs...but a decent boat. My 11' kayak can take a lot bigger water than my 16' Lowe could (which is why I now have a 19' Sea Pro in addition to the kayak!)

I have 2 kayaks now and would be happy to let you give it a try. If you want to get out for an hour or two on Weems Creek some weeknight evening, let me know. I can met you at the ramp.

This is a great time of year to be out in the evenings --warm air, warm water, long daylight, and lots of fish to be caught.

I am not committed to the dark side. I trolled two ultralight rods while I paddled (the two birds with one stone concept). One was in the only rod holder on board while the other was braced under my thigh as I paddled.

When am I going to get you into a kayak?

Well John, that's a good question , and right now I don't think I have an answer for ya :D.
