Comming next weekend is the Northern Neck Anglers Club's Flounder Bash Tournament. The target species are Flounder and Croaker. The tournament is sponsored by J&W Seafood located on Route 33 in Deltaville, VA. You can purchase all of the tackle and bait items you might need to fish this event at J&W Seafood. If you catch a citation fish you can weigh it in at J&W too. If you don't happen to be lucky, they have all kinds of seafood for sale so you won't have to go home empty handed.

Up to now most anglers have been going to the buoy 42 area for flounder. However, there appears to be a good number of flat fish in the Rappahannock right now so that might be the place to go. Check out some of the other threads on this board for more information on where to try.

If you want to learn more about the NNAC all you have to do is Google - Northern Neck Anglers Club - and you will find us there.

There have been several reports of flounder in the Rapp. but not many keepers. It still might be the place to go.

Flounder, flounder, everywhere, and not a one to keep,
Thirty-five throwbacks released alive, but the big’uns were asleep.
But we hear tell, some did very well, by fishing at the Cell.
We saw pictures Team Nightingale posted, they really whacked ‘em good.
But we just coasted, and fished the Rap, since Capt. Dave said we should.

Guess I should have paid more attention to Capt. Dave's second post of not many keepers. It was a fun day, but very frustrating as we caught flounder after flounder without getting any to measure more than 19 inches. Our theory, which turned out to be totally wrong, was that if there are that many small flounder here, there must be some keepers around also.
So flounder experts, please explain why the river holds so many small flounder with so few larger ones. Is it truly just a nursery or spawning ground with the mature females seeking saltier water than exists in the river?

And congratulations to Team Nightingale for their remarkable success at the Cell area. It always seems to be 2-3 footers over there even if the forecast is for less than one, and it takes a commitment to brave the pounding over and back for a 50 mile round trip for me. It is good news to hear that some quality fish have moved into that area. So now we have the dilemma of having to decide whether to devote the day to a long trip to the Cell for flounder or search for the Spanish mackerel that have been spotted much closer to home port.

I'm with you Riverwatcher. 16 throwbacks-all caught around the bridge. Frustrating to say the least. Everything caught on fresh bluefish strips. If anything, at least the catching was consistant and maybe the larger limit size will help the future population increase. And, it was a beautiful weekend on the river.

We have a poet in our midst!

I have caught exactly 1 just-legal flounder in the river this year, and also wonder why there shouldn't be at least a few more bigger ones. I heard a few weeks back that somebody out of Norview had a good day in the Rapp with I think 7 keepers, for what that is worth. I caught the keeper just west of #8 in about 25' of water, jigging a bucktail.

So...did the Flounder Bash Tournament take place on Sunday?

If so...results?

...just wonderin'

I caught thirteen flounder near Cornfield Harbor, only one keeper though. Unfortunately it was Saturday and the tournament was canceled for that day.

Mako, I don't have the results yet. Due to Saturday being cancelled, we may be short on entries.
