Going to Nags Head in a couple of weeks. Insight from this board last year made my trip. Anyone been there recently? I really want to focus on trout. I intend to fish every sunrise and maybe once or twice during the day on good tides. Most of the day and evenings are out since this is a family vacation. My best day was launching out of OI, but I will go anywhere within an hour of Nags Head.

on the sound side, i've fished the islands south of wanchese and have done pretty darn good. flounder, blues, trout, puppy drum, even a sheepshead. awesome area.

cold duck,
I haven't been there in a few years, but I fished the sloughs around the fishing center. To the southeast is the propeller slough. Go further southeast and under the bridge to fish the 'pond'. From OIFC, go east and north to fish around the guard station. You can also head north up to Blossie's creek, behind the bodie lighthouse - there can be fish in there. check out outerbanksflyfishing for some more local info. or go on a charter with him.

Cold Duck, I am also heading down to Nags Head the first week of August and am bringing my kayak for the first time. Where is the best place to put in at the OI? Any good areas you wouldn't mind sharing, most productive lures/methods for that area? Thanks.

I was told last year of a ramp at the bridge by Pirates Cove on the Manteo Cause Way'
I didn,t get to go then but still have it on my bucket list..
Down from the ramp along the shore line about a quarter mile is a small cove and a deep hole with a variety of fish at it's drop off. Perfect paddle for a yak.
I hope to try it after Labor Day as I was supposed to last year.

Watch out for the big boats. Their wakes don't have much respect for small boats and kayaks.:eek2:

Thanks for the info. Pirates Cove is also mentioned as a good launching place for kayaks on the NC Tidalfishing board. Go here.

Go on google earth and you can clearly see where the deep water is. Alot of the water around the fishing center is VERY skinny. I had good luck in water about 4-6ft. Used gulp mullet on a red jig head. Water was so clear you could pick the flatty you wanted to hook. Also caught 24-28" rock and puppy drum. I did give the charters I wide berth, they are working and don't have time to take much precaution for us. See you there.
