That explanation doesn't sound real. The fish in the net are alive until they get sucked up by a big vaccum hose. So how come there was a lot of fish oil?

When the net is pursed at the bottom, the fish are concentrated into a denser school to make pumping more efficient. As the school gets denser, the oxygen in the water is depleted and the fish suffocate. Apparently, these fish died then dropped through the hole before they could be pumped. Suffication also happens naturally in creeks and confined harbors when a large concentration of fish gather and use up the available oxygen.
The Captains keep record of hangs/snags and wrecks and avoid them at all costs. Down-time and repairing nets is expensive so this is a rare occurance and highly undesirable for Omega also.

Hold on. I watched "Finding Nemo" and the fish are alive in the net. :D
Once the purse is hardened, the fish are pretty tight and dead. Too bad it got snagged, but they should still be able to process them once recovered.

NEMO is an excellent reference.
As has been observed, the fish die and sink -- in this case through the hole in the damaged net. After lying on/near the bottom for a few hours, they begin to deteriorate and gases form in the fish which makes them float. I won't speculate on how long it would take for all the fish to float nor how successful a recovery effort would be although it does appear a reasonable solution rather than letting the public be exposed to the consequences. There are many natural preditor/scavenger types of critters to do cleanups after simuliar natural disasters.

Still doesn't justify a fortune 500 company that performs fish rendering for cat food and oil to rape the bay of a major filter fish and marine food supply... Didn't nemo talk about the food chain at some point..........Or was that lion king..Take out the bottom of the food chain and all above it suffer. should get those moron whale war idiots that waste money saving 1 whale to attack Omega and save millions of inocent menhaden. Can't omega switch to havesting mice and grinding them up for cat food...

But menhaden don't have the "cute" factor like whales...... can you imagine trying to get them to perform at Sea World?

Come see the menhaden at sea world !!! lol ....... I may personaly used a dozen or so menhaden a year for bait and chum... Those fat cat corprate guys in Huston are constantly trying to figure new ways to slaughter the Menhaden and squeeze as much oil and money as they can out of them.... Poor little menhaden just swimming along, filtering the water, then..........BANG ........their cat food,!!! what a waste of a life...to end up in a litter box.....its a crying shame

I say we start "Whore Wars". Get members of TF to pitch in five bucks each to a fund for fuel. Brandon doesn't have enough to do so he can manage it. We can whore our members out to do selective trolling thru the bay where ever OUR planes spot the Menhaden. I have volunteer and sickleave burning a hole in my pocket so I'm good for weekday duty. Just a thought. Maybe I should switch to decaf.
Properly, the term is "Sea Kittens" and all "Sea Kittens" are the private and exclusive property of PETA. Shame Omega has left only one breeding pair on the eastern shore of the US and they're chasing them as we speak.:D
