Alaska DNR allows resident Alaskans to dip Salmon with these nets. They use them in the surf and from boats in rivers. A license holder is allowed 35 fish plus 10 additional fish for each immediate family member. Almost everyone here has a freezer full of fish to make it through the winter.

(Another interesting thing in AK is PROXY fishing & hunting. Residents can fish and hunt for other residents who may not be able to provide for themselves. A lot of moose hunting is by proxy.)

Jerry,

Keep up the on-the-scene reports--its great stuff! They also use dipnets from shore in many rivers, and gillnets are also allowed in some areas for some fish for subsistance use. I would not like to hunker down for an AK winter, but if I had no choice a freezer full of salmon, moose, and other goodies would help a lot.

AK takes fish and game management very seriously, and the subsistence aspect of AK regs for all residents is very cool. States in the lower 48 could learn a lot from the way the State of AK approaches fish and wildlife management.

I thought that was a Wye River dip net. Crabs are so big, this is the net we have to use. Sounds like an idea for a T-shirt. Someone could make some money with these.

I hope you are enjoying your trip there Gabby,,,,I mean Jerry. You ain't missing much here crabbing has very poor for the last several weeks,

No matter how big the net is ....nuthing helps crabbing like crabs! Same applies to fishing and duck hunting!

If you see Sarah Palin while you are there tell her she's got my support at the next election, that is, if I can stand the STIMULATION I expect to get on April 15th.

Be careful!

Hi Jerry,

Lookin good. I'm sure you and the wife are having a blast. That would be a good dipper net if you could fit it between the line and the boat. Would be hard to miss any crabs.

take care
Scott

For those of you who wished you were in AK, it definitely has been an experience for me. I should have qouted it, but someone mentioned learning from the fish and game in AK. I can tell you, those guys are very strict when it comes to the fish and game there. So much so, they have shut down most of the king salmon areas due to lack of adults returning to spawn. There have been many caught also outside of the fishing lanes, and have been heavily fined. Also having halibut as the big deep sea fish, they have imposed tighter restrictions that in the southern part of Alaska, you can only keep one halibut per person on board. Homer and surrounding areas are still authorized two. I have also fished for flounder out of Homer from the shore line, they have no limit as to the amount you can keep, though they are not as big as the east coasts summer flounder. If you use the wrong bait, you are also more than likely to hook a starfish or two.
Oh and for some who referenced the mosquito net, I have seen some that are as big as some of the birds on the east coast. But if anyone gets a chance to go. It definitely is a trip of a lifetime. I definitely can't wait for this deployment to be over and fish it up before I have to leave.
