View Full Version : Report from Solomons Island
Got to Solomons around 2:45pm. It turns out that they are determined to make kayakers pay $5 to launch. I use to launch there for free a long time ago from the sandy beach to the right of the pier. I never used their launch facilities. Now they put a fence up to block the use of the beach by the pier. The thing that bugs me, that if you park and use the pier right next to the beach, then you do not have to pay anything. They also have an employee driving around and "following" kayakers around to inform them that they have to pay $5. I guess they are trying to stop a kayaker from launching by the pier. Well, my friend Jim and I paid our $5 and launched by 3:15pm. Fishing was slow at first with our jigs. We then switched to spinners where I caught a perch and Jim caught 3 small 10 inch stripers. We then switched to fish bite bloodworms on a bottom fishing rig and immediatly caught jumbo spots and 10 inch croakers in 35 to 45 feet of water. We had a great time even though we got rained on for 15 mins.

Thanks for the report. I hope to be going out tonight, and some jumbo spot would be good.
As for launching, you could launch from the parking lot across from the big church. There's a little beach there where people sometimes sunbathe. You'll have to lift your kayak over the wooden guard rail.
You could also launch down by the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory. Turn left immediately after the house on the left with the concrete geese and rose bushes. The road ends in the water. You'll have to park elsewhere, though, as that area is part of the waterman's wharf and they lock the gate. I marked the safest place to park (during the week) on the map. This is where I launch when I fish after work, but the CBL lots require a permit. I don't know how often they check for permits, but I wouldn't want you to get towed after getting faulty info from me. :))

You could also launch down by the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory. :)) If you get down that way again and pass by the lab, take a look at the palmtree next to the entrance door on the brick bldg. The last time I was there,it was about 12ft. tall.I have one in my backyard that is now 12ft. tall. That one shoud be close to 18ft. by now.
