Need help trying to figure out how to ship steamed crabs. I know I want to overnite them with UPS. What do you think would be the best way to package them. Got to keep them cold for the trip. I heard of frozen gel packs, any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. Or if any of you that have shipped crabs before can help out.
Thanks
Rick

depending on hwo many you're shipping........you might want to get a small cooler, not styrofoam, so it will hold up to handling issues.
Call UPS and ask them how best to do it? They should know ?

I have seen a web site which does just that for you. They will do both live and steamed crabs. I think you order them from somewhere by the MD VA line, a group of brothers started it a few years back. I'll look for the site.

I use a styrofoam cooler (it's got 30 years of airline stickers pasted to it) but don't know where they sell this type anymore. The cooler is 3-inches thick, not that cheap thin stuff. Need to ask about dry ice if it's going on a passenger plan if the plane has live cargo.

Many years ago, a doctor friend of mine sent me some venison packed in dry ice as a surprise. The real surprise was when I received a phone call from the Post Office, and they informed med that they had a package for me, but it was bleeding. I hope you have better luck.

If you ship it packed with dry ice there are some hazardous material forms you must fill or they will not ship it.They will deliver it back to you followed by a hefty bill! Dont ask me how I know.

Make your own gel packs. Mix 3 cups of water with 1 cup of rubbing alcohol. Pour it in a gallon size zip lock bag and then put that bag into another gallon zip lock bag for safety. They freeze in about 4-6 hours and last a long time. The higher the concentration of alcohol, the colder they will get without freezing solid. I use the 90% alcohol versus the 70%. It will get slushy but not freeze solid. You can also put the mixture in 2 quart size bags.

I agree with Jim rockfish I have had Maryland Blue Crab & Fresh Seafood | Crab Place (http://www.crabplace.com) send crabs to my sister in Az. & I have bought stuff from them and they always do a good job nothing but good things to say about there shipping but they are expensive

Anyone have an Omaha Steak cooler? From their website:
"This packaging is called “mini deep freeze”. The items you order are placed in a polystyrene insulated cooler and plenty of dry ice. This cooler will be safe in any type of weather and are also reusable. You can use for a picnic or any other idea you may decide."

Get a foam cooler from a local fish vendor. They usually throw them away. You need to package the crabs in dry ice.
Cook and drain the crabs well.
Put the dry ice in the bottom of the container with a layer of newspaper on top of the ice. Layer the crabs and seal the container with duct tape or packing tape.
You have to fill out a form that the container contains dry ice.
