Decided to try the Gunpowder this evening. Arrived at Bunker Hill Road at around 530. The water was high and cold and had that somber mist that makes this stream so nice on a hot summer day. I saw one angler a good distance downstream, and there were some kids playing on a fallen tree in the water a little bit upstream--but otherwise nobody else on the water.
I came up here to raise up a few fish on dries, no matter how small they were. There's nothing quite like covering water with a dry when there's just an occasional caddis flying about, IMHO. It can turn into a nice rhythm if you stick with it and trust that you'll pick up a few fish over time. That's all nice to say, but I got suited up, took one look at the green water below the old bridge abutment and promptly tied on a meaty streamer. After two tiny fish, I went back to Plan A and put on a caddis+emerger combo. Then it was just as planned. Walked upstream, casting around, and had a strike every fifteen minutes or so. Missed the only decent sized fish and lost a pair of flies thanks to my striper-worthy hook set. Other than that, pretty decent. Then came a thunderstorm, but that passed and I managed a nice half hour right at dark in the flat water at Masemore Rd.
All small fish, but a pleasant time.
