Fishing all my life (22 years old) and have always admired fly fishing. Looking to get started. Have an 8w Scientific Anglers rod and a Scientific Anglers Concept 2 Model 58 reel that I got from a friend and looking to start out this summer targeting Bass in the pond behind my house and then branching out to puppy drum and specs in Lynnhaven inlet and stripers/blues in the bay this fall. Problem is I've never cast a fly rod in my life. Im eager to start but I don't want to start training improper technique. I've read that casting lessons are worth their weight in gold to a beginner. Anyone know a good place in/near Va Beach where I can take some lessons?

Thanks ahead of time.

First: Put a plaster cast or a huge wad of duct tape on your wrist so it is rigid.
Then
Get a wet paint brush and splat it as far as you can splat.
You see: When you stop your stroke like you hit a brick wall, the
water goes farthest.
This is just as important (slam stop) in the back cast as it is in the forward stroke.

Hi Sea++,

I fish the CBBT as often as I can in the fall. I would be happy to give you some casting pointers and some techniques to try. You are also welcome to fish a day with me if we can match schedules and share expenses.

I have guided in the past and taught a continuing education class on fly fishing at Brown University for some years when I was a graduate student. Based on that experience, I highly recommend investing in a Fly-O (see Royal Wulff (http://www.royalwulff.com/educational.html)). I have no connection with the company. But I have found that tool be one of the fastest ways to get the feel for fly casting. If you can cast a tight loop with the fly-O, you are ready for the real thing.

The Joan Wolff casting instruction video is also really useful.
