What is the quickest and fastest route to get from Manns Harbor to Oregon Inlet via water. Do you have to go around the North end of Roanoke Island or is there a channel south of Roanoke Island that hooks up with Oregon Inlet without going too far south. Thanks in advance for any advice.

go down the back side of Roanoke IS., we always called it the western side. It's plenty deep, avg is about 8ft so you can run outside of the channel with no problem. Just head south towards Wanchese which is at the end of the Island. Head towards the southern most tip, you'll pass through Hog Is bay, you can cut through the last two small islands and the just head ENE towards the channel that runs south to OI. MAKE SURE !!! That you don't just head straight across to the channel after you pass the end of the Wanchese. It gets real shallow in front of Duck Is. You'll see it to your right side once you pass the south of Roanoke Is.
If you want you might try dropping your boat from the ramp at the foot of the Manteo - Nags Head bridge (Washingto Baum Bridge) or the one in Wanchese. They're closer than one at Manns Harbor.
When are you going down? I'm going down to help my Mom & Dad do some remodeling on there house. Let me know and I'll meet up with you and answer any questions and try to help in any way I can.

DP,are you saying that there is a channell that runs between the tip of wanchese and duck island?or do you have to go further down and make a left towards the fishing center?

Its not a marked channel, except for the one green pole at the end of the island. I'm just saying that there is plenty of water if you come from the west side of the island go through the last two small islands and head ENE towards the main channel the runs from Manteo to OI. The charter boats that are over at the spencer yatchs haul out on the west run that way with no prblems. If your down next weekend I can show you how to get through there.
