I was drift fishing off Lewisetta today about 3/4 of the way out to #7 when I saw something large breaking water out there so I went to take a closer look and drove up to a short distance from a pair of Porpoise. I had never seen them in the river before.
Also where are all of the jellyfish, I grew up in the area in the 70s and 80s and they where everywhere. I have been back in the river just the past two years. Today I only saw one jellyfish which was about the size of my thumb. I did see some in the lower bay a couple of weeks ago but even those were somewhat sparse.

We were in the same area early morning last week and saw a large pod of dolphin stretching about 200 yards, probably more than 25-30 total. Really awesome sight.

Was out this past Tues morning with the grandkids. Saw a group of about 10 dolphin at the mouth of Taylor Creek (off the the Corrotoman). The kids were very excited to see them up close. Another strange occurance...one of the kids cauugt a skate off our pier in Taylor Creek. The skate was about 18 inch across. The number of jellyfish appear reduced this year in Taylor Creek and even less in the Corrotoman and the Rapp.

As for jellies.........this is an interesting website with real time information to help track the current population.

I believe you about the porpoises! We get them in the Rappahannock just about every year. They show up about the time the spot do... Like every other predator they're chasing the bait fish.
I took this photo in the Rappahannock between #8 & #6 on August 15, 2007.
