I am comming down this weekend to take a charter trip out. We are staying at Pirates cove. What I am wondering is there any places to fish around there for the days thst we do not have a charter booked. I have never been there and I am looking to do a little fishing on the off days. I know you can surf fish around there. Is anything running now. Thanks in advance.

Looks like Avalon pier is doing fair on the trout and shad also you might fish under the bridge at Pirate's cove but I haven't heard much from there. Good luck on the tuna.

Some areas in the sound offer specs. Check out some of the fishing reports:

You can rent a small boat from the fishing unlimited tackle shop and fish around the sound. The tackle shop is on your left when you are heading towards Pirates Cove, about two miles before. Its at the foot of the little bridge, which is also a good place to fish sometimes. I've caught alot of specs there.

Some small rockfish around the bridge at P/C or the pond down at Oregon Inlet has been holding some trout & puppy drum.

The Tuna bite now is supposed to be the best in recent memory. April thru July is awesome for a lot of stuff off shore. Pirates cove is just OK for fishing and the inshore fishing is only a bit better.

My point is that I'd "go for it" and try to get offshore. Go down to the charter boats and see if you can tag along with anybody. Most those guys have more money than an Arab and more boat than they need. What is one more?! Hang out at the docks and wait for the guys to return (from between 3 and 5 pm). Strike up a conversation (tell em how cool their boat is and how it must be cool to be out there, etc), hand em a beer and see what happens.

If that doesn't work, fish off the piers or go down to the Hatteras point. Better have 4 wheel drive though.

Hell, I'd take you out most days but I won't be down until Memorial Weekend.

Mighty,
not sure where you get your info from.............I run a charter boat out of Pirates Cove and I know for a fact that we don't have more money than an Arab!!!
The boats look nice but they aren't free and they cost alot to maintain.

As far as tagging along.........thats not to good of advise to give someone. If ya want to learn...........charter the boat. Don't stand behind my boat after I have been working all day and blow smoke up my ass about how good my boat looks etc, etc. Thats the last person I would ask to ride out with me.

Just my two cents worth. Have a nice day.

Redauram, (what does that mean?)

I mispoke when I said charter guys... I'm not talking about them, I'm talking about the big 50 - 60 footers down near the entrance. The guys that go out several times a week without customers. I have a home on Ballast point and get down there quite often in the summer so the info I have is first hand. The guys I'm talking about do have a lot of money. A lot more than me and apparently you. By the way, I have been offered several times to go out without even trying... It usually goes something like this: "Hey, we're going out again on Saturday, you should join us". The only thing is that I have my own boat down there and I have control issues... I like to be in/not out. In fact, if someone were to ask me if they could go out with me I'd say yes almost every time. Especially if they'd pitch in for gas.

The other option would be to find a party that is short one or two guys and ask them if you can tag along. Obviously, it would be very inappropriate to ask the Charter Captain if you could join his customers. However, with the outrageuos cost of gas running up charter prices I'm sure a party of 4 wouldn't mind saving a couple of hundred dollars by adding a tag along. (Assuming this person isn't a psychopath or a democrat.)

Short of that, go out on the Head boat or inshore boat and catch some bluefish.

Just my opinion. Don't know any other way for an individual to get into the tuna for cheap if they don't own their own boat.
