Left Hatteras Harbor about 0700 (late start already), almost reached the inlet before my son comes up on bridge and says they can't find the gaffs. I am thinking you have got to be kidding me, yep, my dumbass left them in Virginia, so we turn around and get back in the slip where I proceed to make a run to Teach's for a new gaff. Come back to boat and finally get going again. Nothing like a late start.....:nono:
**NOTE TO SELF: LEAVE THE DAMN GAFFS ON THE BOAT FROM NOW ON!!!
Decided to head north towards some water off of Diamond Shoals, seas were great. Got lines in and trolled north east, finally got a hit on one of the flat lines, thought it was a large wahoo at first, but damn if it wasn't a sailfish. First sailfish this year for us, got pictures taken, and released. Not a bad start considering the morning fiasco. Started trolling again and the same flat line goes off again, this time it was a 15-20 pound wahoo. This is turning out to be a great day, I am thinking I might want to leave the gaff at home again, lol. Start changing out baits to match that flatline. Start trolling again, working the area, but only get a small skipjack later on.
Decide to switch gears and start bottom fishing for tiles and seabass (want to get more meat on boat), ended up with 4 black seabass, could have had more, but friends wanted to head in around 1430. Shame because we were on the seabass.
At the end of the day we flew the sailfish flag and had a good ride back in. Burned about 120 gallons of diesel so not a bad day.
