I finally had time to go fishing. My son and I trolled the area from Windmill light to Stingray light Saturday afternoon. Got a few Spanish and Blues. It's been so long since I have been it was like learning all over again how to troll them up. Stopped in the pack for a while off Windmill and got some Spot (small to medium size).

Anyway, it was much fun and enough for a fish fry!

I enjoy reading the posts here for sure and if anyone can share any pointers for spanish trolling, I will be gratefull!

I caught some really nice size spanish mackerel on the windmill point bar near fleets bay yesterday. I was trolling clarkspoons behind number one and number 2 planers.. give the planers a good amount of line and troll fast... around 6 kts. I was catchin em in 25-35 feet of water

usually i just guess... let it freespool for 12 good seconds at trolling speed. that should give you around 100-150 feet of line. And make the leaders kinda long.. say 15-20 feet

my leaders are 20-25ft...I usually let out about another 30ft line...

I'm coming to the conclusion that these fish are not the least bit boat-shy, and I know the landing rate improves when the fish is hooked closer to the boat. What's most important, I guess, is to get your baits at the right depth, so if you have to be 100' back to get there, you just have to, but closer is better.

Planers run more shallow when they are put way back. They should be as close as possible to the boat. If you want to put something way back, use inlines 2-6 oz on the side rods and planers close behind the boat.

I used to let the planers out farther but i had trouble getting the fish back in to the boat. The fish would start spinning after I slowed the boat and reeled it in, and will twist my line really badly so that when I finally get the fish to the boat I have a huge tangle to deal with. Even with a good BB swivel. I started letting the planers go back less and so I have less trouble getting the fish in. They still bite just as good with the planers up close in my opinion. What is important is keeping the leader kinda long.
