I was with you until you ruined them by battering or flouring them...sauteed in butter with a squeeze of lemon juice, nothing more. Soft crabs are too delicately flavored to compete with the likes of batter, flour or breading. I don't even eat mine with lettuce or tomato usually....

I get that way with sort of nut. It's an allergy I developed later in life. Plus I've got some other sort of allergy to some food in some hot sauce that sends me to the hospital with breathing problems and hives all over my body. All this must have developed sometime in my late 20s because that's when it started.

Anyway.... good stuff there. I was walking the shores of the bay this weekend just north of Cove Point with my son on my shoulders and bare feet. The water was clear, no jelly fish around and we were just checking out all the wildlife around. There were tons of crabs in the shallow water like less than three feet. Some huge too. This was around 10am, approaching low tide. But the weird part was that I stepped on two soft crabs that were buried in the soft sand that I never saw until I stepped on them. I kept one that was good size.

So, how do you cook them again? How do I know they are fully cooked? Then just eat the whole thing right? Sorry for the newbie questions. I've eaten some at a restaurant before but that's about it.

I have been told soft crabs can be fatal for some older folks. They contain high amounts of iodine in them. Anyway, those pics have made many go get soft crabs sooner then they thought they would.

YOU SIMPLY GRILL THEM ON MEDIUM HEAT TILL CRISPY> THAT IS IT! TRY IT ONCE! keep a careful eye on them though. I learned it from a bud and will never ruin a softie again with flour or other chit!

Salmo,
Might be an allergy to certain oils. May not have anything to do with the soft crabs.

Good on you for thanking your dad! My Dad is my favorite fishing, crabbing, cast netting, boat driving, beer drinking, trash talking, heavy subject discussion partner, EVER.

The older I get (I'm 40) the more I enjoy hanging out with him.

If your Dad introduced you to any of the wonderful things that happen with fiberglass under your feet and water around you - call him and say thanks!
