Went out on an overnight trip on Saturday with Danielle (wife), her brother Mike, his wife Jess and, of course, the Pirate. 10 miles off, my stbd transmission lost pressure and I find a cracked brass fitting where the oil return attached to the tranny. By some miracle, there was a redundant fitting on the hose so all we had to do was remove the cracked one and re-attach. Refill fluid and back in the game. Phew!
Headed toward the Heyes Canyons looking for some cleaner water. Trolled through the Baltimore and was not liking what I saw. On the flats NE of the Baltimore we found some porpoises, weeds and less green water. Pushed off some more and just before the South Vries, found some pilot whales and had some tunas blow op on the teasers and one came tight. After a nice battle on a 30 w/ 80lb leader, we put the steel in a 62lb yellowfin (bled and weighed the next day). Nice fish and a welcome surprise. Worked out to the South Vries and called in the other overnight boats because there was bait and whales everywhere with the best looking water yet. Set up just after sundown and started chunking and put out a bucket of chum. Immediately had tons of squid under the boat they stayed there all night (good and bad). The squid were tearing up the baits but it was nice there was bait around! About an hour after dark we had two nice pulls that put some bend in the rod but the buried circles never found the jaw.
Had one nice bite on a outrigger jig that broke off when we tried to slow it down 3/4 of the way into the spool. Nice fish but it wasn't meant to be. Late in the night the blue sharks showed up and we released three. Not what we were looking for but added some excitement.
At first light we were up on the troll but no bites in that area. With a tired crew, we pointed the boat back toward the Baltimore and Danielle caught her first white on the west wall around 11! Trolled for a little more than pointed her home in calm seas. Not a banner overnight but a nice tuna in the box, some pullage at night, beautiful weather and a white one released to top it off. Mike put Danielle in the drink for catching her first white when we got back to Bahia (glad he was there to do it!)
Now to the bad news. Had some increased blowby and oil coming out of my stbd engine and made the call to have it looked at. Turns out I have a shot cylinder. Going to be down for a while (and poor). Anyone need a ho?
