in the TLD manual it says to keep the drag in free spool with the clicker on in order to avoid warping the drag while not in use. is this the same for all lever drag reels or just with shimanos or TLD's?

That would be the safest thing to do on any lever drag reel or any reel for that matter. I even back off the drags on my spinning reels to keep from compressing the washers and causing problems . If they sit for too long without use they can stick on you.

Pretty much true of all reels, star or lever. Storing them with the drag set can wrap the drag washers. I wash them with the drag set to keep the drag washers dry and then back off on the drag to virually free spool for storage.

Lever drags you should slide all the way to max while washing...let them dry a bit then back them off to store them...can't hurt to do this for any reel

The older drag washer materials could take a set if left under pressure. The new stuff seems to not be affected. FWIW: I still back mine off as well - hard habit to break.

With Penn Internationals - be very careful not to leave it in free spool where the lever holds the indent button down. Left compressed for a long time - often it will not pop back up. Best to have the lever slightly forward.

Bill,

I always drop the drags back after use and storage. This will help them to not warp and make them keep an even drag pull when you fight the monster.
