I was running the Southern Belle today when a call went out Greg on Canyon Express for help. Greg asked me to assist since I was closer. We headed over there and started talking to the Coast Guard. Another boat was following him in and he was heading to Lynnhaven Inlet. His boot had come off of one of his Outdrives.
Please let me know how it turned out if you know. It was a 28 Carolina Classic.

Was listening in on 16...sounds like the CG got to them near Lynnhaven Inlet and assisted. A cutter and RIB were fortunately in the vicinity to escort an inbound sub.

Damn that's too bad. really sounded like the CG had them tied to the cutter but the transom had submerged.

The news report is not too specific (as are most) so it may be recoverable.

I was on the Hooked Up with Louis, we saw the boat go down off Lynnhaven. I took a lot of pictures of the boat going down. I am happy to say everyone was rescued, but the boat sank to the bottom fast.
Sad Day for a boat owner to see his ride sink to the bottom, I hope it was fully insured.
At least everyone is safe and sound.

we stayed in Sunday & knew nothing of this. Has the boat been recovered? How far from the inlet were they when it went down?
Hate to hear that, but glad everyone is safe.

Why didn't he just run it up on the beach?
Insurance payout worth more than boat?

This has to be the fourth Carolina Classic I've heard that sunk. I actually saw one towed in that was half sunk from the out drives separating from the transom. Sounds like a similar problem.

Was this the result of a soft transom ?

Uncle Bob:
Not the result of a soft transom. Most likely (purely speculation on my part) the cause was the bolts holding the transom shield in place broke or sheered in two. There have been several boats (not just Carolina Classics) that have had an influx of seawater from failed outdrive bolts & went to the bottom. I'm told by my friends in Edenton that the bolts should be inspected every so often & about every 3 seasons the transom shield should be removed so the retaining botls can be inspected for corrosion & stress fractures. It's awful hard to get to my bolts in my 25' Classic but I try to do so every so often.

The same thing happened to my friends 28' CC. He was at the Fingers and boat sank in less than 5 minutes. They had a buddy boat.

Why didn't he just run it up on the beach?
That was the first thing I thought as well. Sinking boat goes on the sand or straight into a travel lift if you can arrange it.
*edit, nevermind just read about it over on the va board. Doesn't sound like there was time after he pulled back.
