Merc 95 XR6 alternator

i can't seem to find out anything on the XR6 alternator. my cranking battery keeps draining. is it a seperate part or is it included w/ the starter or something. i can't seem to find the part online. can it be done your self or does a mechanic need to do it. thanks in advance for any help.

The motor doesn't use a traditional alternator. It uses what is called a "stator" to generate electricity. The stator is mounted under the flywheel and unless you are an experienced mechanic, changing it is best left to a professional.

Are you sure the motor isn't producing a charge? Or is it just producing a sub-par charge. It should be outputting in the neighborhood of 14.5 V.

The voltage regulator is another critical part of the charging system. I believe these go bad far more often than the stators do.

Run motor and measure voltage across the battery terminals. As Brian said, you should get ~ 13.5 to 14.5 vdc. If not, voltage regulator/rectifier is the most likely failure. To be sure, measure AC voltage from stator to the voltage regulator/rectifier. For most Merc's, this should be ~> 16 VAC at idle and is the yellow leads to the regulator/rectifier. If the AC voltage is > 16 VAC, then the regulator/rectifier is bad. There are other tests as well. Get a service manual (the OEM one) for details. One of the most typical causes of regulator/rectifier failure is high resistance battery connection(s) or removing a battery lead with the engine running. Good luck.

thanks for the help guys. i'll try and get some help to do the test. but most likely will have a shop look at it. i did see stator's in the parts list when i was searching. tight lines.

Is it true ? You need to replace both regulator/rectifiers on a 40 amp charging system if one is bad. I heard if you replace one , the other one will go bad. There not cheap.

on the newer merc engines the rec/reg is one unit. a little aluminum box with about 5 wires coming out of it. For the alternator unless they changed it should be either a 30 or 45 amp unit.

Also forgot to mention! If you can see up under your flywheel and see your stator and it is black it won't be a cheap fix. They had a problem with the windings in the black stator and switched to the red stator which has redesigned high and low speed windings. If your stator is bad and you have the black one be prepared. I think the conversion kit cost about $350 and that isn't including labor.
