I have a 2001 2252 Cierra 5.0 liter mercruiser. The RPM needle is pointing at 900 rpms with the motor running or off. Any ideas?

If all of the wiring is good - sounds like you need a new tach.

Not knowing your boat I would bet that the tach normally points to about 900 rpm when it was new with the ignition turned off. When the ignition is truned on the tach would then read zero. You're saying that it reads the same regardless of the ignition state.

Prior to just going out and replacing the tach, I would check power supply voltages to it first using a dc voltmeter. Sounds to me like you've possibly lost your 12 volts somewhere along the line. It could be your tach, but i would perfrom some prliminary checks prior to replacing it.
