Can anyone direct me to a native plant nursery that sells these at a reasonable price? Environmental Concern in St. Mikes is out of them. I'm continuing a two-year project to re-vegitate the steep and previously bare, eroding sloap behind my house. It's in the Critical Area. Plenty of blueberries and mountain laurel grow in the woods behind the house, but I don't want to rob Peter to pay Paul.

Thanks for any leads in the Annapolis-area.

Might be worth a call to Adkins Arboretum on the Shore. They're having their big public sale this weekend. They specialize in "native" stuff, which I assume is what you're after.

I picked up blueberry's form Lowe's off of Quarterfield road in the early spring, but have never seen them in the area wild. Went back there lately looking for Mt Laurel and they did not have any. My guess is that they only carry it in the spring also. Also bought Raspberry's and got two summer yields. I would like to hear if you have any luck, cause I was thinking about doing the same thing.

I called Adkins. They have them (not many) for $20 ea. Homestead Gardens in Davidsonville has a few smaller ones for $24 ea (and larger ones for 40-something). Homestead also has Mountain Laurel, but at $46 a piece, I'll just try to transplant a few from my woods in the late fall.

Ouch,
That seems really expensive. I bet in the spring they are cheaper. Don't think I paid that much for the Blueberry's. There are a couple of places in Annapolis that sell in bulk and work with the county. If you were doing a hill side, you could probably use the bulk. I'm just going to check in the spring or I may try grafting or whatever it is called. If you don't mind the drive, you may want to check Valley View Farms also. I worked there in college and they have a large inventory.

I work with the guys who own this. He has hundreds or maybe even thousands of blueberry bushes on his property. Tell him I sent you. he may be able to direct you to the right spot.

Jeff, Mountain laurels grow so slow.. Why not something different ? And how many blueberries can you possible eat ?

Thanks again, Francis. At this point I may need to wait until spring, but I will give him a call then.

I'm not growing them to eat (although I probably will harvest a few!), but rather to provide habitat and, even more important, control runoff. I've planted a bunch of stuff to see how it does (Virginia Sweatspire, Elderberry, etc.). It's a science experiment as much as a landscaping project.

"Edible Landscaping Online" (http://www.ediblelandscaping.com/plants.php)

Try bay laurel instead of mountain laurel, grows a little faster and smells great...you can also use the leaves to flavor food...
