Has anyone seen rock in the river so far? Im going this evening and am trying to decide whether to run to PI, Podicary, or up the river? Have a great fall weekend!

Word on the street is that things are still slow.....maybe the H2O is still a bit warm or something, but it ain't on yet....this colder weather could be the ticket as it usually gets going here soon....keep your fingers crossed

I would try the dawn bite this time of year. Try fishing shorelines where there are good dropoffs and short piers. I used to throw a six weight flyrod with small poppers, gurglers and sliders in August and September with much success. If you are using a spinning rod, I would texas rig a Bass assasin and dance it along the surface.

I went out last night for an hour. I had on hit and nothing touched the TW lures. Bait was popping everywhere.

Was this bait in shallow, or out near the chanel ledge?? Refresh my memory, are you uprivier or downriver from Round Bay?? That is very encouraging news.

Clancy,

This may help a little.

Thanks Mark, trust me, I read those reports with a magnifying glass but Evans said when he was out the other night the usual shallow water areas were devoid of any bait. You said you saw decent bait in RB, I'm betting though it was in deeper water....when things get good is when that bait is in shallow, which is really what I'm wondering here from hard ripples....

FWIW : I've gone over the Rt 50 bridge twice this week at almost daybreak -6:00 am. I could see at least 10 different bait pods - looking towards the 450 bridge.

I'm betting the point at Manressa is holding Rockfish. Beware the milk jug - not sure what is on it but it is snagged tight. Plan to do a recon dive next week if it is still there - 20 feet of water. Thin line on it - not anchor rode.

I did several drifts near the float that Skip mentioned. It is a short ways away from a no-shellfishing buoy at the Manresa point. There were lots of screen marks. I jigged a metal spoon and a jighead with twister tail. I caught two perch on the metal spoon and nothing on the jighead.

I moved up-river and found some schools of 10"-15" bluefish on the Severna Park side of Round Bay. There were no working birds and no masses of breaking fish. Every now and then I saw a splash and either cast that direction or later I slow trolled using the same rods and lures that I had cast before.

The river was calm and clean looking today, except when I made a foray into Brewers Pond (my first time there). I stopped the outboard a few hundred yards offshore and used the trolling motor to move into and around the pond. On the way out, the trolling motor struggled to make headway against the strong incoming tidal flow. The water inside was extremely muddy. I tried casting to shorelines and fallen trees but could not get a bite.

Clancy, the bait was in 3-5 ft of water, it really started popping right at dark . I saw most of the bait off the channel from Luces going to the bay. Im going to fish it Monday night and see if I can hang something.

Hey guys, so as not to lead anyone on a wild "Goose" chase, I want to clarify that my report last week was from the Bay near Bay Ridge, not the Severn. That area always heats up in late summer. It seems to be at its peak just before the Rock start showing up in the River.

I've also noticed, in years past, that the Rock seem to show up strong at the head of the Severn before I hear of them being caught in Round Bay and such. I have no idea why that is, but I can tell you that, so far, I've heard no reports of anything being caught in the upper-Severn. The place has apparently been dead all season....not even Perch. I hope that changes soon.

Thanks for the clarification Jeff! I was thinking your original post was refering to the Bar & Grill.
