For now, Id say yes to support the comms and packing houses. All the crab you buy canned is female meat primarily.
My honest straight gut tells me to not catch, buy, keep them for a moratorium of a year. But that wont happen because it would cripple local economies.
In past years I have caught, kept and ate females. I like eating females.
And have sloughed many doublers/female peelers. I miss it!
I go back to the rockfish moratorium in my thinking. It worked!
And, my livelihood doesnt depend on the female crab fishery either so my thinking isnt in the same mind set as those that profit from the female crabs.
I wish I or someone had the right answer. I know one thing, there are a load of females out there! Maybe it is all working and we just dont know it yet.
OK, beat me up or otherwise.

Great post.
And it is a tough question to answer.......but I'm sorry the answer is NO!
Packing house, soft crabs, peelers....................to damn bad!
The breeding stock must be protected.............it is that simple!
If the commercial operations can't deal with restrictions or moratoriums they will have to move on to something else or re-invent themselves
Its called adaptation.............survival of the fittest!
Many have done it before....many will do it again.......ask BETH STEEL or any steel company for that matter..............how about the auto industry.
Sorry...........lifes a bitch!

C-hawk,
I made no comparison between the two!
It was an example of people who had to move on, re-invent themselves, or perish................and people who will soon have to do the same thing!

Interesting that at this very moment the wholesale price of crab in VA has fallen to very low levels. Females selling for under $20 a bushel and #1's for only double that. Not to mention NC is having trouble selling the crabs they have.
Interesting isn't it.

Made no comparison? If not then why bring it into the topic????.......to make a comparison like I thought.
It's just apparent, from your comments, that you have ZERO knowledge of the life cycle of the Blue Crab.
