Ok, i have only had this boat for 1 year and it is a 92'. The shift lever seems like it shift fairly hard and i'm wondering if that is like a lubricating problem or is more like a trans problem in a vehicle. Cars i know a little about, boats are a different animal to me. Any help would be appreciated. I'm also looking to replace my steering cable so i figured i'd look into the controls as well.

Thanks for any help..it is MUCH appreciated!

All cables go bad in time, if your's are original they are now 13 years old. Unhook the cable at the motor and see if it's still hard to move the shift lever. That should isolate the problem.

If it's a single lever shift-throttle control, there's a friction adjustment which may not be adjusted right. Shift-throttle do not require lubrication, but the helm units do occasionally. Have fun!

Don't adjust too loose ... you don't want the boat taking off from a gentle bump against the lever. Also, shift briskly, not gently. Slow, gentle shifting tears up the internals in the lower unit. You shouldn't hear a bunch of clicking as you're shifting!
