Rumor had it that there were some boscos caught at the Baltimore and the sat shot from Tuesday morning showed some nice water on the west wall so that is were Terp, Billy and I started. We dropped lines in short of the point in 75 degree water and trolled up the west wall searching for the 79 degree water, but couldn’t find it. There were some pilot whales & birds there but the few tuna came to our spread were small and we ended going 1-3 and added a peanut mahi.
Decided to leave for the water at the Poorman’s; dropped lines on some nice slicks around the 120 line in 40 Fathoms. We found some tuna but wasn’t being very efficient in getting them to the box and went 2-5 with a couple break-offs due to beat up leaders from last Sunday’s trip. Now on to the marlin, Billy & I were tight to two that must of thought they were birds with as much time they spent out of the water, pretty show. Terp did a great job clearing lines and figuring out how to get Bill & I untwisted from all the tangles that are typical from a multiple marlin hook up and a 9 line spread. Bill got a release on a short bill spearfish, first one I’ve seen other than pictures in the books and Terp release my white.
Next fish hit was on the Bird & GM on the wwwwb; Terp took the rod and said it was BIG:bigfish: so we cleared the lines and had to back down on the fish so that we could recover some line. I took over on the fish after Terp’s arms gave out, this thing was a beast and after a few minutes I knew I needed the harness, so on went the “Sally” belt and the battle; after a lot of up & down battling we finally got sight of the bird below us, Billy was doing a great handling the boat as this fish was trying its best to put the line in the motors. We were convinced that we had a big Big Eye with they way it wanted to stay deep: BUT boy were we surprised/disappointed to see our third marlin of the day that was foul hooked next to the dorsal fin. Guessing the fish swatted at the bird and got a surprise attack from behind by the GM. The next marlin that came in the spread was greeted by lots of threats from Billy & Terp; they wanted to waste no more time on these pointy fish unless it was going on the grill, I actually thought I was going to have to hide the lead to keep them from throwing sinkers at the bills in the spread:eek:. Would have been nice to have done better on the landing ratio for the tuners, but all in all another great day on the water.
On our way in we crossed lots of slicks across the 20 fathom line, BFT?????
3-8 YFT
3-4 Marlin
1-1 Mahi
