Hi Pards,

I have a Sea Pro with Yamaha 150 power that has a single start battery. I get engine noise on the sonar at any speed above idle. I'd like to run the sonar on an isolated second start battery that is out of the motor generator circuit while at speed. I see in the motor manual how to hook up two batteries with one serving the accessories and the other for engine start. I bought a Perko 8051Basic battery switch, but don't understand how I can get the second battery isolated to run the sonar.

At times, I'd want the motor to charge one or both batteries. Other times, use either or both batteries to start the engine. Finally, use either battery isolated to run the sonars. Am I asking too much of a single switch?

Thanks for any help,

JTB

The switch will isolate the batteries when it is in the 1 or 2 position, and join the batteries when in the both position.

Hi onefinnfool,

The fool is me because I looked at the schematic that came with the Parker switch and took "C" to be the "common ground" that I would hook the negative battery/motor wire too. Ha, ha, and maybe not so much ha, ha from the resulting melt down.

If my fool brain is now thinking along the right path, I hook both charge/start leads from the motor to the "C" terminal. The load one and load two lugs go to the positive of each battery. The boat accessories will still draw off one battery when it is in the switch ON position. The second battery would not be in the charge circuit and I intend to run the sonars with this battery. Hopefully I won't get any feedback between my HDS8 and HDS5X. I can switch the batteries to ALL and charge both batteries or just one at a time with different switch position. I'll always have either battery or both in parallel to start the motor. One session on the water with a dead start battery is enough! Now, I'm going for redundant overkill as I also have a jumper cable to run from trolling/bait tank batteries for a quick start.

Decision now is where to mount the switch. I'd like it outside the starboard hatch were the batteries will be housed. I suppose I'll end up trying to keep it protected from the elements inside the hatch.

As you can tell, I still need recommendations. I'll only be in salt one time each year. The rest of the time will be in fresh water (Kerr and maybe Smith Mountain Lake).

Thanks for your response,

JTB

Be carefull unless your engine is specifically configured to charge both/all batteries at the same time, the both/all setting should only be used for emergency starting/short periods
