View Full Version : Fishing South of the Point

Never fished the point and we were wondering?

1. If we were to go down and fish the area south of the point at Buxton, is it safe to say that the point somewhat protects the waves from hitting the beach there? I ask because, obviously it would be easier to yak out baits in calmer waters. I know it depends on winds, but it seems the winds down there usually have bit more northern flavor than southern. Can anyone let me know if my calm water kayak dream is possible?

2. Also, is there any kind of depth south of the point or is it all just a big flat?

3. I know from some searches that sharks are caught down there in December/January... How about now? Anything big with teeth lurking to fight, catch, and release, and hopefully snap a good picture before it snaps my hand off?

4. Are there drum to be had south of the point, or do I have to be one of those fellas standing "right on the point"? I know the answer is, they could be anywhere. But realistically?

5. What's a good ramp to access? I think 43 or 46 I read? And also, can you stay out over night now?

Thanks guys and gals!

I'm not that familiar with the point and there are probably some better sites for that info.

1) Yes. We yak out there all the time.

2) It is fairly shallow in "the hook" as we all call it. There is a ledge out quite a ways. The water depth drops off past that.

3)Hmm..this time of year the focus i on the big red drum. Not sure about sharks.

4 &5) You can stay out there all night, but you have to get a night time driivng permit. You can get them at any tackle shop. There is no 46. #49 is the ramp at the far end of "the hook." You access it by turning oceanward across the strret from Frisco Rod and Gun (Billy Mitchell Airport Road) 43 and 44 are the ramps that you access by going on past the lighthouse. They are "the point" ramps. Big drum can be caught anywhere and in fact the woeld record was caught off the beach in Avon years ago. A lot of people fish the north beaches (Ramp #38 area)

The best thing to do for surf fishing info is to try these boards:

Red Drum Tackle -- Buxton, NC (http://www.reddrumtackle.com)
