I fished the round bay area tonight...spent all night on one point. There were plenty of fish there and didn't really have any reason to leave them...! I was casting kastmaster spoons right to a current seam that I could see rolling off the point. The kastmaster was big enough to get a striper's attention if he was in the area..but I was amazed at the # of small/medium perch I was getting on it as well. The perch action was pretty steady...I caught a couple dozen in about 1.5 hrs. Then once the sun dropped I switched to topwater...had a nice rockfish on but he threw the hook at the last minute..!!! Doh! I had the net right there...was already planning how much crab meat to stuff him with...and then *slip* - he released me!

Unfortunately for the perch, I was not in a very forgiving mood and had decided to punish most of them for the bad luck I've been having....many were condemned to a quick death before being rolled in flour and dipped in boilin' oil...

Isn't it funny, when you want meat they self-release...when you are C & R'in they swallow every treble as if it was their last meal....go figure...nice catchin'

The spoon is the trick for the Perch! Have also picked up fairly large rockfish on them, but usually on the bigger size. I saw online they sell them with tipped treble hooks kind of like they have on spinners.

That sounds like a good idea...maybe I'll break out the fly tying stuff and add some candy to the trebles..

It seems like beetle spins are hard to beat in the summer, but for some reason I always end up fishing spoons in the fall for perch. Maybe it's just me?

Can you let me know what kind of topwater lures you have had success with? I have used some of my freshwater lures with some success, but nothing great. Have black zara spook that should work well at night, but they don't make much noise.

I hooked that one on a cheap-o bass pro shops popper that I was fishing pretty aggressively. That fish thought that lure was good...but I can't speak for the rest of them! (c:

I wish I could guide you better, but I'm still learning a lot about this type of fishing as well.

No problem. One of the problems where I live is that nobody has lights on their docs, so it does not attract the bait. Tried last night for a few minutes, but it was pretty windy.

I use Zara spooks, lonely angler spooks, full size Stillwater smack-it's and full size chug bugs....color does not seem to matter....the availability of dock lights should not matter, it may help, but most all of my topwater bites have been at or in the dark....as with all of the shallow water fall rock fishing, good current and structure play more important of a role...i can tell u some more of interested, please bmail me...
