Anyone running these motors offshore? Can you give some details on fuel/oil consumption, maintenance?
I'm looking at repowering with a pair of them for a 30' Mako.
Thanks

Not the best yamaha built there seem to be 2 side to it. You either got a really good one or a real bad one.
They are known for being oil hungry and eating up powerheads.

Be sure you research them thoroughly. Not just HPDI in general, but "250" HPDI. The small block HPDIs are great...the bigger ones not so much.

I have an 03 250HPDI. It was plagued by fouling plugs when new and went thru I think 4 factory recalls. After 200 hours of Yamalube, I switched to full synthetic oil and this seemed to cure the issue of fouled plugs. The fuel to oil ratio averages between 40 and 50 to 1 and it doesn't smoke. I've always closely monitored the oil usage and tweaked the oil linkage as necessary. I think the tech manual is poor in this regard. I read reports of many failures of this engine, requiring new power heads but mine never let me down. I've always kept it maintained, including decarbing every 50 hours. My Yam tech said to me years ago that it may have been this one maintenance item that kept me from having the major ills that others experienced. A couple of years ago, I went thru the fuel system replacing the low pressure fuel pumps, filters and cleaned the VST. The water pump has been replaced twice. I also drain the Racor filter after every trip, replace it every 100 hours and drain the engine bowl-type fuel filter every 100 hours, replacing it every year or so. I have over 950 hours on this engine and have been 80 miles out with it. I've had lots more trouble with the kicker I have for backup than I have with the HPDI. All this said, due to its reputation I wouldn't want to purchase an engine like mine now, at least not unless the price was VERY right and all the updates had been performed. Good luck if you buy these engines. Feel free to bmail me or call me at 757 547 3844 for further discussion.
