Was thinking of making my last crabbing trip this Saturday but with the nor-easter coming this late in the season I was wondring if anyone had an opinion on how it will effect crabbing.
In the summer I've found that the day after a major storm is usually fantastic.
It's probably going to be a crap shoot however I thought I would solicit your opinions.

I would just wait and see how it looks closer to Saturday. We are supposed to get rain, rain and more rain accompanied with 20 mph wind. All that rain is not good for crabbing.......Gary

I hear you Gary, I think by Sunday It might be worth one more try. We'll see though.

My guess is that with the FM's still showing, the males will be around for awhile so there's still some decent crabbing left. This front won't help matters but if it's not too snotty, go get em. I'll hang in there til NOV on the PAX and will be happy to report when I'm no longer seeing crabs in any numbers.

I planned either this Friday or Saturday as my last day out but looking at the weather I don't think I'll do it this week. Last Saturday we got beat up real bad, don't want to repeat it again. I'll keep my eyes open and if it looks like the weather might break I'll go.

If I didnt have other things influencing my decisions, Id plan to go Sat-Sun and see what Ma Nature ends up actual delivering. WE are getting down to the wire now with this current wx pattern. Water is going to cool quick.
If I end up going, Ill report.
I really want to hit it hard again.

Today was PAYDAY!!
5 baskets of lovely crabs.
Birthday celebrating and crab feasting at my daughter's in VA this weekend and my friends will be celebrating RAIN FEST in a campground in PA this weekend while camping and steaming/picking crabs I supplied them with.
I rarely place any stock in what the Wx forecasters guess about any more. Been screwed by them too many times in the past. Now I go and give it a try. My theory is...if it's too bad, I come home.... that hasn't happened yet. I'd rather go and have to come back than not go and wish I had because the forecast was not as bad as predicted. My crabbing gear also consists of a full rain suit. Doesn't yours?

Yes Jerry,
Yellow bib overalls with matching jacket and white Servus boots. Or sometimes I have the camouflage boots.
Both are a good look for me. In summer, I go in my loin clothe. Rain suit gets too hot to wear.

Thanks for the input guys. The rain and wind never bother me because you can always find a spot on the leeward side. Just wasn't sure if a major nor-easter shuts things down this late in the year. I never let the weather (except lightening) stop me before so being this late in the year I just have to go. I haven't missed one Saturday all spring /summer so I guess I should keep my record intact though my 50+ year old body is starting to tire just a little, but I'm not complaing since I'm sure most of you guys are right there with me.
What am I going to do, watch elk hunting on ESPN Saturday morning - think not. Good luck to you all, hope to see some guys out there.

Way too much work to get done today or I would have put those necks back in the water for another soaking. The critters are HUNGRY and hang on to the last second.
It's well worth the effort!! The reward is awesome. Just be careful, dress warmly and take a good rain suit with hood. For those that chill easily, take a thermos with a quart of hot water into which you have placed 4 or 5 bullion cubes of beef or chicken. It's a great warmer upper.
Yes Jamie, you can borrow my rain suit....... Gotta warn ya tho... You'll fall in love with it. Huge deposit required.:D I'm sure you have the requisite camo gear.

VERY GOOD POINT Jerry. You and I have had this conversation before - when you stop doing what you love to do you basically dry up and die. I've watched it many times and it breaks my heart. I have promised myself that when my time comes at the very least I'll go with a friend and help out even if I can't do what I can today. I enjoy culling crabs, I enjoy baiting lines, and I like the smell and feel of everything that goes with hunting, fishing, or crabbing.
My wife and I recognized years ago that some of the best friends we have (or had) were MUCH older than we were - it still holds true today .

I went up the road a while today and said to my #2 son, we could have gone out today. Not too much wind it seems. I would have gone too had I not been concerned for his well being and staying warm.
I am really considering tomorrow but the wind is going to be a bigger factor per the forecast. But, what do they know.
I want one more basket of tar crabs. Got everything at the ready too.
WE will see.

I did get out Saturday morning around 8:00 and did fine in the Wye. By about 11:00 caught my last bushel for the year and was very pleased that the weather cooperated. It wasn't as nearly as bad as they predicted.
I know all crabs are good crabs however they just didn't taste as good as I expected. Although they didn't look light when I was dropping them in the basket, when cooked 75% were stringy with a darker tone to the meat. Notheing like the plump crabs of summer. I know everyone says the fall crabs are best I just seem to catch the wrong ones.
I'm not complaining though, just making an observation. I feel blessed antime I"m onthe water.

Just finished steaming a basket full that was caught Wed., 10/14. They kept well outside with a wet rag over them. They didn't seem to mind the rain.:D
A few light ones succomed to the ravages of larger crabs, but there was minimal loss considering the time element. Great tasting too!!! Plan to do it all over again this coming Saturday. Someone's gotta do it!

I crabbed Saturday.
Water surface temp went from 66* a week ago to 56*,and with that I went to deeper water 9-10. BIG MISTAKE:eek2:
3 1/2 hrs later and a 1/2 bu of heavy crabs. Wet,cold and sore I dejectedly returned to the dock. Only to be greated by 2 commercial guys in a alumn boat that I saw eariler in the shallow water 6-8 with 4 nice bu:confused:
