With the weather taking a distinct turn for the worse for the next few days, I decided to hit the Severn River last night before the winds kicked up. In looking at the weather forecasts this morning, I'm glad I did.

I launched from Jonas Green Pk. and fished up to the Rt 50 bridge. There's lots of bait in the river and plenty of stripers chasing them.

The topwater bite was pretty hot for about a half hour around dusk and you could see various groups of breaking fish in the shallows and along dropoffs up and down the river. Had a bunch of blow ups but only hooked up on a couple fish.

As the light faded I switched to dark 4" plastics and caught about a dozen fish around various dock lights, with 3 around 22". The bite lasted as long as the outgoing tide was flowing, then the fish got skittish and became harder to catch. Stealth was key.

Although it was chilly and drizzling most of the evening, it was quite a beautiful evening with the sound of the rain and a light mist coming off the water. And, it was just me and a couple herons with all the fish to ourselves. It's such a great time of year to be on the water.

Hey Steve, I fished the other side of the river Tuesday from 10 - 1pm and caught 2 keeper Rock and a few Perch on a gold spoon. you are right, the baitfish are really schooling up as I saw big pods moving around so I kinda hung around them casting to the edges and it paid off. I posted a picture near the bottom of surfsams post http://www.tidalfish.com/forums/kayak-fishing-anglers/273390-easern-bay.html Sounds like you had fun yesterday, thanks for the report..

Sounds like a sweet evening. When things calm down and fish under the lights get skittish, I've coaxed a few more out by casting well past the light, bring the lure into the lit area, then pausing. The fish usually hit on the pause, but that spot will be spooked for a while after the fish is caught. I'm looking forward to taking out the flyrod under those conditions since the fly hitting the water won't make as much noise.

Everything looks easy when Steve fishes. Some fish smart and some fish hard.
